Hi guys, wifes has a 2003 grand am with 55,000 miles, small amount of coolant is dripping out of the passenger side engine area...after she parks, I get 1 drop per day. I cant track down where it is coming from, probably water pump???. If it were an older car or tractor i'd do bars leak in a second, but with this new pinkish-orange antifreeze and being it is a "newer" car, I hesitate a bit. My experience with bars leak or prestone radiator stop leak is about 9 times out of 10 it works great, and saves $$$. But with this newer car, anyone got any concerns about me using it.????

Thanks!

1995-2003 GM 3100 and 3400 V-6 engines are plagued with leaking intake and head gaskets. How GM has gotten away without a recall is beyond me.I see 1,000's of complaints about them on the internet.

Many have let anti-freeze get in the engine and have ruined it.

If it"s the waterpump, look for antifreeze to be
thrown by the pulleys, belt or fan up on the under
side of the hood. The insulation sometimes catches
enough so it does not drip on the ground.

Still have leaking lower intakes on that year.An updated gasket has been released along with a bolt kit to prevent bolts from coming loose due to improper(or no) thread locker applied. The new bolts have locker applied already.Clean bolt holes and proper torque are critical.

Could still be water pump.Take a mirror and look at bottom weep hole at pump.

This is a 3.4 liter engine V6 i9n the 2003 grandam.
I think the plenum leaking problems were tied to the 1995-1999 3.8 liter engine in the buicks, bonnevilles, etc.

This is a smaller engine.
Can anyone offer more information.

Naw, the 3.4 engine had the same problems as the 3.1. If that is the same setup as my wifes 99 Malibu, with the 3.1, or 3100 engine, which I think is similar, I just did the intake gaskets because of the same leaks. The gasket set for the complete set, will cost you $76.00. It took me about 12 hours to do the job, and you will need an inch pound torque wrench for the job. Where do you live at in Indiana? I live in Liberty Indiana, just south of Richmond Indiana. Email is open

My moms was a 98, mine is an 02, my friends was a 03. dealer told me the issue did not get fixed until the 06's because I was trying to get him to put on an 06 plenum, but did not work because the new ones are some sort of metal and the others are plastic . And yes the engines I am talking about were all the 3.8's

Is it a quad 4 engine? My spouse had a Grand Am, and being the rocket scientist I am, I thought I could simply add some coolant. Wrong!! Evidentally you have to bleed the air out of these things, popped the heater core. To make matters worse I still didnt know about the air when I replaced the heater core so the head gasket went the next time. All in all it was a $1500 lesson.

Nearly all of the pontiacs and some of the chevrolets have a history of plenum gasket leaking. It can be serious and needs fixing right of way. My shop told me of several customers who had engine lock ups from the antifreeze getting in. My mothers Bonneville had to have it aT 49000 MI and mine went out at 55000 and my friends bonne went out at 51000. A new plenum is needed along with the gasket because a change was made to the plenum to correct the problem. My dealer keeps several on hand in parts department because they deal with it almost on a weekly basis. Seems like it cost me about $450 for labor and parts.
