Two stroke Detroits were sometimes fitted with turbo's and they often had by-pass doors in the blower.

In that age of truck you could get both an 8.2 detroit and a 453t detroit. The 8.2 is a 4 stroke v8 engine and the 453t is a 2 stroke inline 4 cylinder. Hopefully he can tell the difference or can look at the spec label pasted in the glove box. Loy

Did some hauling of cars for a friend who runs a salvage company a few years back and drove a GMC straight truck for him with a car hauler body that was a back and over the cab type. Engine was a 4-53 that had both a blower and a turbo on it. He bought it out of Florida from a lady whose husband had special ordered the truck from somewhere and used it for a couple of years before he died. It was the first and only one I have ever seen with a blower on one side and turbo on the other side of the engine. The other guy hauling was running one of the big IH V-8 engine around 500 CID and we both had 5 sp trans + 2 speed rear ends. I could keep up with him, but you had to continually change gears and when in town you felt like you were rowing it you changed gears so often. It burned 1/3 less fuel than the IH did.

If it REALLY is 8.2 liters, it is an "8.2 Liter Fuel Pincher Diesel".

They are 4-cycle, and were made in both turbo and naturally-aspirated versions.

I've linked a site below, that has some information.

Look on the ground under the motor, If it's a 2cycle 453 there will be oil there.

Good One Workhorse.
I was thinking about those Deetroits since the subject came up this week.
I'll bet some of the reason they went away was because there were a LOT of parts in those engines. Didn't they have a pretty complicated valve train?
And those blowers must have been an expensive item to manufacture.

Detroits were screaming gutless junk. Id take a 855 over a 8v92 any day of the week. Noise emissions and the oil leaks would definitly stop them today.

The company also had a bunch of Shiney 290 Cummins.
The Deetroit was definately more fun to drive.
