I BOUGHT A TRACTOR AND HAVE FINISHED RESTORING IT. NO BATTERY WAS IN IT WHEN BOUGHT, THE STARTER NUMBER IS FOR A 6 VOLT SYSTEM, THE COIL IS 12 VOLT, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE GENERATOR IS. HOW CAN I TELL THE VOLTAGE OUTPUT AND WHAT VOLT BATTERY TO USE? THANKS

Voltage reg? Check out it"s voltage?
Any light bulbs? Might give a clue?
Unless changed just for sale, it will be 12 volts.
You need to check polarity of coil as well as generator - if it is D.C.(dynamo)
Presuming the generator is not A.C. Polarity important if it is, though.
Whatever it is, you need to check it out first, although it is not impossible to check the generator output separate from running the engine.

It would help use help you if you also said what the tractor is. With a 12 volt coil that is if its a true 12 volt coil then you would have to have a 12 volt battery or you will not get enough spark for it to run or at least run well. Now as far as the genny well it could still be a 6 volt one or it may have been rewired for 12 volts. About the only way to chack that would be to take it to a rebuild shop where they have the equipment to test it

take the generator off and have it checked and see what it is putting out,if everything is stock it should be a 6 volt system however, you put a 12 volt battery on it and still use the 6V generator, it just won't charge as good. What we do is if it is going to be restored and we're not sure what system it is just decide which you want to use and rewire it.

There is a man here who works on genereators and stuff and is reasonable. he can rebuild or rewire one as in make a 6V into a 12V and stuff. Also if you rewire it now it will save you headaches later on when your at a show and have to find a short or something.

Well first you will be lucky if it even starts since it will have a weak spark. Plus if the genny has been reworked to put out 12 volts it will either cook the battery or worse blow the battery up in your face which will not be good for you or the tractor with all that acid fling all over the place. It would be safer to use a 12 volt battery and not worry about hurting the battery
