Not trying to add to the usual color wars but am interested in anyone's general opinion. Especialy overall quality & dependability.

The 4x4 mags rate them highly in off road tests.

Thanks,
Bill
ps: In general I am a GM guy but have owned a F150.

I think you'll find that most bad-mouthing of Jeeps comes from people who've never owned one. When it comes to the traditional CJ/YJ/TJ Jeep, it's a lot like it used to be with the original VW bug...the world is divided between the true believers and the Philistines who just don't get it. That's why my YJ carries a banner decal on the top of the windshield that reads, "It's a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand."

I have a 1998 Cherokee Sport. 177,000 miles, had to replace the heater core once, tires, I must of had to do the breaks at some point, but, I don't remember. Been a good vehicle so far. I'll let you know what I think at 300,000.

If you are going to use the 4 wheel drive and you are talking about newer years the Wrangler TJ series are great. Look for the Rubicon package and you will get 3/4 ton Dana 44 axels with 4:10 gears and a low granny transfer case. The Rubicons also have electric locking differentals. The 2007 Rubicon is the best Jeep ever built. Same as above but crome-molly axels and a V6 from the Caravan. The regular old Cherrokees from the 80's to 2002 were great for 4 wheeling also. Different years have different qualities I pick the 97-98 but I wheel them hard.
The Grand Cherokees had an option called Quadra-DRIVE. Not quadra-trac. This is the Grand of choice especially with the V8. You usually find Quadra drive on the limited's. Stay away from the old CJ's. No overdrive and they beat you to death. If you find a clean CJ 7 middle 80's all stock with a hard top you can resell them easy if you find one cheap under 3800. If you want the best bang for the buck go to the new car lots and tell them you are looking for a Cherrokee and that you are a wholesaler. These things are getting too old to resale on there lots and they just auction them off anyway. I paid 3500 for a 98 with 133k on the odometer and my bud just found a real clean 93 5 speed this way for 2600. Denver has a good market for these and you can probably to better else ware.
Email me if you have any specific questions on the one's you think may work. One more thing is they made Cherrokes and Grand Cherrokes in 2 wheel drive so find out befor you get too excited. They all get crappy gas milage also.

Disclaimer: What follows is just my opinion, and based largely on input from other folks (AKA "hearsay") but it's so consistent, I have to think it's at least somewhat accurate. YMMV...

Jeeps are built with whatever parts happen to be handy. Is not at all unusual to have a mixture of fasteners, some metric, some SAE, holding on the same part. Pre-AMC Jeeps are okay, everybody that's owned the name since AMC has made a cash cow out of it and ridden on the name.

You can buy more 4x4 for less money from virtually any other manufacturer.

I have an aunt who swears by Jeeps. She's had them religiously since about the late 60's. I don't know why she swears by them, since they seem to live at the repair shop as much as they live at her place. She usually gets over 100k miles out of them before they're falling apart so fast and expensively she finally sells it and buys another.

We've got some here at work. You usually find them either not moving in the parking lot, or on a tow truck going somewhere for repairs.

I learned to drive on them nearly 50 years ago, and have driven them, off and on, since then. Currently I own a soft-top '95 Wrangler YJ that's my fair-weather toy. This one has the carpet stripped out, bedliner sprayed on, 31" tires and a 2" lift for a real old-fashioned utility Jeep configuration. Reliability has never been an issue....this one has 105K miles on the original 4-cyl. motor. Noisy as heck, and rides about like my 8N, but it's sure fun and the grandsons love it too. I'm sure a more civilized version would be equally reliable, tho' perhaps not quite as much pure fun.
