plant my 23 acres into oats and not mess around with any corn , soy beans and such. It seems like there is always a demand for oats and oat straw around here for horse. I have a feeling there will more acres than expected seeded into corn next year due to high prices now. I kind of would like to let the land get a break from the RR beans and corn rotations of the last 20 years.
Will still have the ussual few acres of sweet corn. What are ya ll's earning from oats

We grow, on average, about 10 acres of oats every year along with Alfalfa. We clean some seed and sell it for seed if we can, and we plant our own for a few years before getting certified seed again. I think for oats that we cleaned ourselves we sold for somewhere around $3.50/ bu., and last year I delivered 80bu. to the southern end of the state, past Milwaukee for a nominal fee. We've also loaded it onto trucks that one guy ran and sent it past Madison.
We sell some of the straw in smaller bales for decoratioin for $3.50-$4/bale. All in all, it covers the costs pretty decent. 2 years ago we planted about 12 acres of oats and I think we got close to 95-100 bu/acre. We sow it heavy and ussually have good luck. We grow taller varieties too, ussually almost chest high in a good feild.

I'll have to take a picture of our oats this year...

Also, if you'd be interested in buying some year-off oats we'd be more than happy to talk. Not sure what dad will charge this year, but we clean it all with an old Clipper Cleaner if requested. Otherwise ya get what ya get, weeds and all.

Oats goes about $1.80 down here. It's less cost to grow, but you get less per acre too.

If you can sell the oat straw, you can come out ok.

You could put doen some clover for plowdown with the oats seed, will help build your soils and add N for corn next year.....

As far as corn goes. I buy my corn for my stove from a local farmer who plants over 100 acres of corn and sells it by the 100# bag. $7 for 100lbs. I will have to ask him how much he sells per year. You may want to ask around to see how many people have corn stoves.

The local grainery here does not take oats. I have grown them and sold them locally for horse feed, but it can be tough to get people to take delivery. Unless you have a bin to hold them all, you might want to think about that. It can be a problem if you are out of wagons or trucks and your customers can't unload them till next week. I got $2-2.25 for mine.
