706 D PTO Pack

Well,hello gentlemen.I have a 1965 706D w/282 engine.My problem is the pto has quit and I am going to need a new one or get this one rebuilt.What does that kinda work run in price and where might find one already rebuilt to just set in place of the old one? I"m in N Al area,but that don"t matter much I"ve got to have it.

Ive had to take my 806 one out several times and what I do is park the front end in the ditch. That way you dont lose very much of your hyd oil, and I have the pickup tailgate parked within inches of where you pull it out at. When you go to put it back in you might have to roll the starter over a little to get the splines lined up also.

As said below there are things that may have happened here ,if it quit all at once two things may have happeded one the tiny littel pin in the control valve broke and the only way you can tell if that happeded is if you remove the valve and it comes out the plug on the bottom left of the unit . Now this pin is tiny and they do break . Next the top part of the valve may have backed off as you screw the valve up or down in the top nut to adjust lock up prssure . Now here ya need to BUY the fitting for this job and you also need a hyd . gauge that will read 600 lbs. Myself i like setting lock up pressure on a 706 at around 235-245 as this is higher then what they were from the factory but you will never slip her . Now if it must come out then it iw wise to do this job on a concret floor with a cherry picker as it is heavy and alos you must tip it down as you come out as not to bump the pickup tube , a pointed pry bar or a pice of pipe over the shaft will work for this . Now as said below there is a spring in there that WILL TAKE YOUR HEAD OFF but that is only if you are going deep into the unit as you can relace the clutch pack with out worry to this spring . I would recomend that you get the Hd. clutch pack that has the 7 and 9 disks and plates as this is what i use in them here again more then what came factory but it is better . This job is not that hard to do and is not that much money and tryen to find a GOOD used one won't say ya can't but i would rebuid what i had then ya know what ya got.

If you end up taking the control spool out you might want to change it to a 66 style valve.The 06 & 56 series used a self locking style stem that wore out after many years of use.Then they had you drill a hole & put a allen screw in,but now when you set the pressure the screw could be right on the edge of the indentation from the last time the pressure was set.After using for awhile it will move & then it,s loose & you will have low pressure again.

If it quit without warning I'll bet Bob is right about the little pin, I rebiult the pto on my 1256 because of that little pin. The are not that hard to rebuild if you have a IT manual and have access to a guage to set the pressure. However there is a spring in the clutch pack just waiting to take your head off so be carefull, and the pto unit is heavy so if you take it out yourself a extra set of hands would be nice but one person can do it.

MANY things can fail in the PTO unit, the simplest of which is a little pin that holds the upper and lower parts of the control valve together. If it failed completely, all at once, the pin is the prime suspect.

If the little pin breaks there will be no PTO apply pressure. It is simple to disconnect the control linkage, and remove the large plugs at the top and bottom of the valve, and see if it has fallen apart. If that is the problem, the pin needs to be replaced, the parts reassembled, and then the PTO operating pressure needs to be checked at a test port.

If you decide to tear into it, it's best to at least have an I&T manual at hand, to see what's involved in repairing it, and checking/setting the pressure.

If the little pin has not broken, the problems could range from a failed pump, to a blown seal, to a torn up clutch pack.

Well it ain't the little pin on the valve. I pulled it out today.I guess I'll have to move on and get it pressure tested.It didn't quit all at once,it would run and stop.I may have to get it rebuilt.It's my main hay tractor so she has got to be right before spring.Thanks for all ya'lls help.
