I'm looking at getting a tractor that has roughly twice the power of my willys. It has a pto with 3 pt. It's a pretty amazing vehicle. I'm thinking of an 800 series ford, but I don't want to get something that the jeep can do already. I'm worried about the lightness of the ford. Would it have comparable traction to a 4X4 with tire chains? Any suggestion are welcome.

Hi '47, finaly a subject right up my alley. I used my '53 CJ3B as a tractor for a few year, but I did not have the three point, just the PTO. I got a tractor a year and a half ago and the difference between the two is amazing. I know your jeep has live hydraulics, but on-live PTO. If you get a tractor with live pto and hydraulics and all works well, it'll be much handier. Also, my tractor weighs close to 5,000 pounds and would pull the jeep around all day, 4 wheel drive or not. As an added benefit, now I'm not beating on my classic jeep that I have thousands of dollars into, but rather working an older tractor at about 20% of it's designed capacities.

Thanks cj3b, I was hoping an old jeep rider would comment. I'm going through the same thoughts you did. I don't want to tear up the willys. Sounds like you have a lot heavier of a tractor though. I think the old fords come in around 2,800 lbs.

I have a 1964 David Brown 880e diesel, it's a great old tractor that I have about $1,000 into plus equipment. It's a much beefier vehicle than the jeep. When I ran mowers off the PTO of my Jeep I always worried about breaking something as it's just not as strong as a tractor designed for that purpose. That and the tractor has a governor, live PTO and hydraulics and a three point cat 1 or 2 depending on how it's set up. I'm working on a front end loader right now. I still use the jeep to haul a trailer for firewood, rocks and such, but I mostly use it to drive back roads.

Hey 47,
I've been 4 wheeling and trail guiding for years and from what I've seen it does'nt matter how the Jeep is built up it all boils down to tire height. Now take a two wheel drive tractor and put tires on it 2 or 3 times the height of your jeep mud tires and the tractor will out perform without chains. Maybe if you were backing up hill, out of a ditch the 4x4 may have an advantage. My neibors got a small Yanmar 4X4 tractor and my 2 wheel drive 8N with taller tires, had to pull him out of the snow. You know I loved that! I did,t even think of using my Jeep.
