Hi all,

My neighbor wants to grow a few acres of pumpkins next year. He called last night to see what the row spacing and width should be, therefore how many seeds per acre.

We grew pumpkings 20 years ago but I cant remember what the spacing was. Any help whould be appreciated.

Thanks, Grant

Hope I'm not too late on this but we used to grow ten or so acres for many years. We evolved to use a Cole 12MX one row planter set up on a three point hitch on a small tractor. They have a large seed plate setup uniquely designed for a large seed. (a small JD planter with manually "opened-up" plastic plates might work too) We planted on a seven foot row and 18 inches between single seeds in gravel loam soil. We then ran a tractor driven rototiller between the rows for most weeds and band sprayed over the top for grass and fungus things. There is a chemical that will kill grass and not pumpkins. Maybe Poast?
We did not like the three seeds to a hill thing because of too much plant competition and the difficulty of mechanical weeding. We got bigger pumpkins and better results with one seed.

We also band seeded dry fertilizer at planting--I think triple 12?--and sidedressed N just before the runners started. Pumpkins love fertilizer and not just N. Do a soil test. Buy treated seedsa dn watch for Fusarium (sp?) wilt and powdery mildew. Get a resistant variety. You will likely need to spray for cucumber beetles with Liquid Seven.

I planted them in rows, 6 feet apart, 24" spacing within the row, 3 seeds per drop. In blocs 36' wide, with a spray row between the blocks. Then I could put a hand wand sprayer on my big sprayer and by going down both sides keep them sprayed.

If I was doing it today, I'd probably match the rows to plastic (I think the plastic layer they have here to rent is 8'
