Reported in our newspaper today: News > Metro East > Story Clinton County farmer dies in grain auger accident
FROM STAFF REPORTS

12/15/2006

A Clinton County farmer died after his leg slipped into a grain auger Wednesday night, authorities said. The farmer, Gerard Buss, 53, of Beckemeyer, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:25 p.m.

A safety shield on the auger, which dispenses cattle feed to the farm animals, had been removed by the farmer some time ago, David Moss, the Clinton County coroner said Thursday.

The shield had been removed because the feed sometimes was getting stuck in it. Moss declined to speculate what role, if any, the lack of a shield might have played in the accident.

Buss was discovered unconscious shortly after 5 p.m. by a deliveryman, who called for help. But Buss was dead when firefighters arrived. Buss bled to death, Moss said. Advertisement

"It was a tragic scene," Moss said. "The family was very traumatized."

Buss had a wife and three children. He volunteered at Mater Dei High School when his children attended school there.

Several family members were at the scene when emergency responders removed Buss' body from the machine.

There was a misunderstanding and the truth is the shield was not removed and due to no one being there it is not known what exactly happened. (oh and it was not a grain auger it was to feed cattle) He preached safety to anyone who would listen. At the very least maybe we can learn to be extra careful.

it is so easy to take a guard off and think you will remember to stay away from the moving parts. it might work for a while but everything i do reminds me that i used to have more fingers than i do now. now we have small kids and although they arent supposed to be around equipment, can we leave guards off or things running unattended and think they wont get currious " what's that thing doing in there daddy" is a reminder that in the blink of an eye a 3 year old will go from the swing set to the barn and it might be too late. i can not imagine what it would feel like to have one of my kids killed b/c i did not do my best to protect everyone.

i'm sure we all know of someone who has had major injury or death . keep shields in place . my dad got his arm broke because of missing shield . it lead to end of his farming career as arm took over a year to heal .

Maybe we should remind ourselves that we can get into trouble, even when we do not break any rules. Too often we treat SAFETY FIRST as a cliché. I condole with the aggrieved.

I lost my right foot in a grain auger when I was 10 years old. Thank God my Dad was there to pull me out and take me to the emergency room.

My thoughts and prayers are with that family...

KEEP THOSE GUARDS IN PLACE!!! It's not worth your life, or anyone else's!
