Slip Clutch for bush hog - Are they rebuildable?

I'm pulling a 6 foot Woods rotary cutter behind a John Deere 2010. The slip clutch that is an integral part of the drive shaft began to slip recently. I examined it and found that one (out of two) of the discs had crumbled into pieces. I removed the six nuts and springs and pressed out the bolts. This exposed the crumbled disc, but the remaining disc is sandwiched between two pieces of steel that I cannot separate (althouh I can rotate them independently of one another - they appear to be machined together in some fashion that is not apparent by examination). Is it standard practice to simply replace the entire slip clutch or can these things be rebuilt by replacing the clutch discs? I saw some at Tractor Supply for about $120, but I thought it might be economical to rebuild. Thanks for input. Joe Stewart

Hey thanks for all the replies! I think its that 'metal center plate' that I can't get off! I can rotate it, but it won't pull out. Will try again tonight or tomorrow. This slip clutch has 2 discs, one of which disintegrated and the other of which is still fairly intact. Thanks for the link. I hope to buy two new discs and get this clutch back into service. Yeah splines on drive parts can wear and plates can warp but should be able to see that. The TISCO aftermarket complete clutches if needed or separate parts or just dics are far less $$ than the OEM parts. Went with the TISCO clutch on a Rhino shredder for half or less than what a OEM dealer wanted. For the Woods the TISCO one may be the same thing too?

You should drop to your knees and be thankful that the problem is that your slip clutch started slipping. The big problem is when they freeze up and you twist out shafts, yokes and u-joints. I have a Woods MD-172 and have taken the slip clutch apart and cleaned it to make sure it was all free after setting over the winter. It sounds like you have one metal disk that has siezed to the shaft and may need to be soaked with penetrant to break it loose. The best thing would be to go to your local(nearest) Woods dealer and have the parts guy show you the schematic for the assembly. I have found the Woods parts were no more pricey than trying to match the parts such as seals with what looks the same at the local NAPA store. On the Woods I have you need to make sure the plate held by the springs are not seized to the bolts when it has been unused for long periods. I make a practice of backing off the springs, checking that the plate can move and then make a few rounds in the field before retigtening the springs. I wish you well with the repair, yes they are rebuildable.

I rebuilt a slip clutch on a bush hog brand and I just took the bolts and springs off. Had to soak one of the disc too remove the metal center plate. Bought 2 new disc and the center plate from the New Holland dealer. The service mgr. gave me the measurement for the spring length.
