I have a Farmall h 1944, the problem that I am having is this ... when I have the tractor running high idle or in the feild it seams to sputter, even when not under full load ... almost sounds like it's flooding out??? What I have done so far is this ... new plugs and wires, new condenser and points, cleaned the sediment bowl, added gasline carb cleaner, adjusted carb ... can't find the cure ... any ideas? thanks

I've had that happen to me. It took a while, but I finally found that the inside of the distributor cap had some carbon tracks and I had a couple of the contacts shorting together. Wouldn't happen all the time, run good, then sputter, run good, then sputter, that kind of thing.

How old is the gas? Water and dirt or trash in tank? Good flow of fuel to carb? Is carb bowl running over with fuel? Fouled plugs? Plugged air cleaner? Get rid of carbon core spark plug wires and run metallic core wires and non resistor spark plugs. Just got to narrow it down some more....

Start by checking to make sure that you have a strong spark. Pull the center wire out of the distributor, hold it near a good ground while you try a start. You should have a fat, bluish white spark; not blue, red, orange or yellow. It has to be bluish white and strong. If you don't, check the point setting and point cleanliness(no corrosion, ,or severe pitting). Also make sure that the primary circuit has near battery voltage to the coil. Next check the timing and advance. Check the run out on the distributor shaft. If you push sideways on the shaft with the points closed, you should see no motion at the points. The shaft should move less than 0.002". Pull your plugs and read them. Are they carbon fouled or oil fouled?
If all this checks out, the make sure you ave an adequate fuel supply. If there is a drain plug at the bottom of the carb, open it and catch the fuel in a container. You should see fuel run out the drain like a cow peein' on a flat rock for at least 45 seconds. It should be a continuous flow not intermitent. If it doesn't check the filter in the sediment bowl and any other filter in the supply line. If it's OK, you may need to readjust the float valve. With the engine running, try adjusting the carb mixture. If younhave to enrich the mixture too much, sustect n air leak down starem of the carb etering section caused by leaking throttle shaft, laek in connect flange between the carb and the intake manifold or a leak in the intake manifold to head interface. Spray some carb cleaner around the areas with the engine running(Carefully it's flamable) and listen for the engine to speed up if there's a leak. Do all these checks systematically and record the results. Get back if you have any questions.

Well done Jerry. I second your post. Diagnosis is a much more reliable option than just guessing. Changing out parts is expensive enough, but without them being faulty or not changing the situation is just downright wasteful.
If it is only high idle it could even be backlash in the timing department - worn keys, maybe -allowing timing to vary. Not likely, but possible.

Might be in need of a valve job. might be weak valve springs. Might be a worn distributor.
