I have bought some stuff over the net. Several thousand dollars in the last few years. I have never had my data stolen. I have used ebay. I have used Paypal. But if I can help it, I will avoid both as much as possible. My Paypal account is completly screwed up. I don't know if I have paid for an item or if somebody else has got my money. Paypal has not responded at all. Ebay has - but they say they cannot do anything with paypal problems. And now I am getting all sorts of "second chance" offers. Lots of them. For auctions and items I have never heard of? Basically, Ebay has got me about 100 spam emails in the last 24hours. I wish there were better competitors to ebay.

Most all second chance offers are bogus, don't believe them. Any email saying "click here" to verify your act., or anything like that is fake too. Do not reply to these, don't click on any links, it just confirms your email address. Any transactions you have to do, go to the website [ebay / paypal] do not do them through email links.

My opinion of PayPal anymore, I do still use it, and still do sell on ebay. I also sell on Craigs List, and the scammers run wild on there.

I too have had problems with Ebay/Paypal security. Ebay does indeed own Paypal, but doesn't want to take responsibility for the problems that comes with it. To read more, go to ClarkHoward.com and read what he has to say about them. Back about my own experience, contact Ebay security thru their own site, NOT any supposed links you may have in any of your emails telling you your account has been compromised. Ebay will walk you thru correction steps, including a conversation with one of their employees who will ask questions that only you will know the answer to, I won't divulge all the questions, but a for instance is what email address you had when you first signed onto Ebay. Don't waste any time before you contact them, the longer a breach exists, the harder it may be to fix it. Be prepared to change ALL your passwords, the scammers are extremely smart.

Did you reply to some "phishing" email, giving the scammers knowledge of your PayShaft password?

I would immediately remove all linkages between Paypal and funding sources like checking accounts and/or credit cards if you haven't already.

I'd also change my password to something long and comprised of nonwords and a number or two. Also change your ebay password.

I'm in charge of IT at a small university and have seen several cases of money being stolen after "odd things started happening".

You say your Paypal account is "completely screwed up" - have you seen anything odd in your credit card statements? Or checking accounts?
