1952 Farmall - welding shifter

First - thank you to "Don LC, IaGary and Allan in NE" for your suggestions for our Farmall that was stuck in gear on our driveway (see 12/3/06 post). Thankfully we had just enough room to drive around it until it was moved.

Now that it is back at the top of the driveway, I want to repair the shifter so this doesn't happen again (at least for awhile) - any tips on welding the end? Am I adding weld to the very end (making it longer) or to the sides of the tip (making it wider)? How much? Any suggestions on the best rod to use? Any thoughts are welcome.

JWB: I doubt if you need to make it longer, they don't wear on the bottom. I've rebuilt 7-10 of these going back to the late 60. Shape it so it just neatly fits into one of the notches of the shifter rails. Start with in full size of one of those notches and grind until it shifts smoothly. When new that end of shift lever was a perfect rectangle with very slightly rounded corners. If you make it much longer it will rub on bottom and be hard to shift anywhere. I've been around these old Farmalls close to 50 years, never seen a shift lever rounded on the bottom end yet. Look at the wear, not hard to see where it's worn.

Yes - it was in two gears ... ended up jacking up the right side on the drawbar and while one person rocked the wheel the other used a screwdriver and pushed the gears back in line.

You'll want to make it longer. It should be round at the bottom, your's is probably squared off.

It is definitely squared off now - the slot it sits in is rectangular and flat - are you sure it should be rounded at the tip?

7018 would probably be the best rod to weld it, however try to find out what it is made out of. It's probably steel or cast steel. If it is 7018 will work. Dave

Youll just hawe to look at it and try to decide where it is wore away.... I traced mine on paper and took measurements before starting..... if you dont you wont know where you started.....if I rember I added 1/8" to the length and adout 1/16" to each side..... grind it flat and smooth.....that may not be perfect but it should work for a long time.....maybe some one has a new one they could post measurements for the rest of us..... good luck Don
