I've got a fuel oil furnace in my shop that's been giving me headaches.Sometimes the furnace won't do anything when i turn up the thermostat,
sometimes it works.Recently the thermostat doesn't do anything so i hit the reset button on the furnace motor and it lights.Today after hitting the reset button the motor would run,but not light.I tipped the transformer up about 1/2
inch till i saw spark jump across the copper contacts and it lights.I've had several furnace people look at it the last couple years and they all tell me to get a new furnace, but it's only 10 years old.I figured you guys could figure it out.Thanks.

When my boiler does that it has usually burnt the ignition rods back to far and opened the gap so that it has a hard time sparking.

I run 3 oil furnaces, 2 are in shop enviroments one of them in a fabricating and polishing shop. The 2 shop furnaces are one's I bought cheap as they were take outs in favor of new boilers. I looked them over and test fired them. One had a Beckett burner and the other a Carlon burner The Beckett fired just fine so I got a new nozzle and cleaned it all up. been firing fine for 12 years now with a yearly cleaning and new nozzle. Cleaned up the Carlon but it still didn't act right. Talked to a couple friends in the know on these and they both said the same thing. Got to a Beckett dealer and tell him what furnace you have. So I did. He plunked a new Beckett burner on the counter and got a new nozzle for it. $375 and that furnace is running just fine. Now all my furnaces are standardized as far as burners and I keep a spare transformer, primary and cell as well as the different size nozzles as I have these at different firing rates. all the filters are standard as well. The guys at Beckett sent me a service manual so I service my own furnaces. Heck of a lot cheaper to screw them up myself (haven't yet) than pay somebody else 300 bucks ($100 each) to screw them up (which happened to at least one of the furnaces every year).

When you tipped the transformer back, several things could have happened:

1.) Air blows out by the transformer, and there is less air to the burnerhead, so it's easier the light the fuel as the transformer is tipped back.

2.) There could have been a flake of carbon shorting out the electrodes, and moving things around could have dislodged the carbon, or making the spark gap back near the transformer could have caused the carbon to be "zapped" off of the electrodes.

The electrodes could be worn, or out of adjustment, or the air could be out of adjustment, or the nozzle could be partially clogged, making a poor spray pattern that carbons up the electrodes.

Also, a WEAK ignition transformer can cause "fits". Yeah, I know it looked like a lot of spark to you, however, it still could be weak.

Plus there is the issue of the bad and probably unsafe primary and the cad cell. Also bad transformer, as increasing the range increases intensity. Plus probably way out of adjustment after having 3 unqualified techs look at it. Too much going on for the average Joe.

There are too many separate issues going on with your furnace to safely guide you. Find a qualified repairman.

well to start with i would change the oil filter , then i would change the oil nozile in the burner and make sure the cad cell is clean, then i would adjust the air intakes on the side of the burner. or just call a oil burner tecnition to repair it

Along with the xfmer there should be a relay/ cont actor for this. Make sure those contacts are smooth and clean. A shop is a tough environment for such things.
