My 1980 model 1650 cub cadet is hydrostatic drive and when I am moving forward it seems to change speed at will. Also when trying to go up hill in reverse it goes very slow. Is this the way that it is suppose to act? If not what is wrong and how can I fix it?

I have a Hydrostatic 1650 Cub Cadet with a rebuilt engine. The engine runs fine except when I put a load on it like going up a hill. I am told the transmission needs to be replaced because it is binding the engine. Sound right to anyone? If I need a transmission, anyone have one,or an old 1650 that I can put my good running engine in?

Bull, If the engine runs fine and seems to lag when Hydraulic pressure given (like in gear) I drained my Hydraulic oil (requires taking entire back plate off and buying new gasket) Perked right up and runs great, also, If it seems weak in reverse, thats a sign of low Hydraulic fluid level

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your slow reverse??? My 1650 does the same thing. I have been told that it is a sticky hyd. valve in the transmission. Please let me know.

I had the same problem recently. There is an adjustment on the linkage attached to the arm that causes the trans to shift into neutral. It takes some trial and error, but the guy that showed my how was an experience mechanic and he did it in about 10 minutes. The bracket is attached to the tranny, that bracket has holes cut in slots which allow the bracket to slide up and down. The movement of that bracket determines where neutral is at and where the unit will go into reverse. If it is set correctly and it still does not go into reverse, you may have to replace the worn linkage.

Have you changed the HY-TRAN and filter. This may help.
