I have a new ring to install and it is not marked for up or down. It is a compression ring, gasoline engine; also it has one edge beveled. Does the beveled edge go up or down? Thank you.

Ryan

I just got some for my bike and even though each is packaged nice in an envelope separated etc ,each having instructions printed with the other languages on it make it hard to read.I just printed out the info Bob gave link to and its so much easier to understand besides telling you how bad you screwed up if the bevel is the wrong way.Mine did not have the dot and had the inside bevel. Why cant they all just have the dot I dont know but at least I got it straight now.I also looked at the rings supplied with the pistons in a microscope, very crude and rough up close the surface of the Hastings looks much nicer magnified.Pretty good price too. Thanks for the link Bob

Sealed Power or Perfect Circle had an even better "ring installation tips" page, but I lost it in a 'puter crash, and haven't been able to find it again. I need to recover what I can from the 'puter's harddrive, and see if I can restore some of the links I had!

If i can rember corectly, there should be a "dot" on the ring next to the gap. Dot goes up. Otherwise, chamfer edge faces up. Mike

There's no reason for new rings not to come with instructions, but here goes:

If the bevel is on the OD of the ring, it faces down (opposite the "top" of the piston).

If the bevel or step is on the ID of the ring, it faces up (towards the top of the piston).

That's the way I remember from school. inside up outside down.

Hastings.com should get you to their web site and it should have this info and more.

The easy way to remember is to reflect on an important part of your anatomy -
When it is in, it is up, When it is out, it is down.
Liken that to the bevel or step on the ring, in equals up, out equals down.

Learned that when doing my trade 35 yrs ago and never forgot it!
