hydraulics - cold weather problem

I have a 1966 B414 diesel. It was -24c this past Saturday at my place. I needed to clear the snow from my driveway and yard so I started the tractor up and let it warm up for 1/2 hour.

I jumped on and went to lift the loader but there was no response. I tried the 3 pt and the same result - no response. I let the tractor run for another 1/2 hour and tried again but again no response from the hydraulics.

The temperatures warmed up over night and Sunday morning it was -9c. I started up the tractor let it warm up for 15 mins and this time the loader and 3 pt responded immediately.

The hydraulic fluid was drained and replaced with new HyTrans this last summer. Is there something I should look at that needs replacing/repairing? Would a magnetic pan heater applied against the resevoir tank help at all?

If anyone can offer suggestions to improve my hydraulics behavior in cold weather I would be very grateful.

Thanks
Ken in Alberta

Hy Trans is petroleum-based, and is only rated down to -20, but it starts to thicken well before that. I suggest using Amsoil ATH synthetic tractor/transmission oil. Its rated down to -47F!
You won"t need a heater for this oil. It"s a significantly better oil than the Hy Trans.

Is that the same as the filter on the suction line? I am brand new to tractors so I hope my questions are not too silly.

Thanks
Ken
