hello all--my wife and I own a small horse farm (16 acres). We have about 9-10 acres of woods and the rest is pasture, etc. We are looking into getting a compact tractor which we would like to use for brushhogging, possibly hauling wood for heating and other maintenance. Any suggestions on what we should get? What about 4wd vs. 2wd. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I would have to go the same direction as everyone else, that perhaps a MF 135 might be just what you are looking for.

We have a 135 Diesel and a 35 Deluxe gas with a loader on it, and those two machines have taken care of every task we have thrown at them. Now they are getting some age to them, but they still keep going.

The 135 plows, bales hay, disks, hauls firewood, you name it. It has the live PTO, the 3 point hitch, and we have an aftermarket hydraulic valve for it, so it runs a splitter, the haybine, etc.

I have seen a few of them in your price range.

But just my .02

I'm in central NY too. Saratoga county. If I were you, I'd draw up a wish list of things you would like to be "able" to do. If you want to plow, will you be OK with a 1 bot. 12" or do you want to pull a 12' chisel? Take some time and REALLY think. This can save you thousands and a lt of frustration. My guess would be around a 1950's tractor. Easy to fix, hard to break. Different makes have different features back then. Want to pull heavy...don't get an 8N. Want to do alot of 3 pt. work...8N is near the top of the list. Do you NEED live PTO? I bale, haybine, and even combine without it. When you have a fairly specific list of uses post them and the guys here will get you in the right direction quick. ( don't think anyone could ever go wrong having a MF 135 around). Mike

Look for an MF 135. Highly desirable, especially the diesel but the gas models are good as well. Dave

3000 Ford , 300 or 350 utility International , somthing like that will do more than the little 4x4 puddle jumpers and easy to work on .

I will let the guys with more experince chime in here on the pros and cons of tractors you can get at that price range.
You will be looking at a used tractor for sure and only 2wd. I would go to the dealers and see what they may have on their lots just to get an idea of what is available in that price range. You will still need to purchase the Brushhog on top of the tractor purchase price.

If you are able to work on your own tractor the better you will be.

Read through the articles on the link below.

Is this going to be your first tractor?
Are you looking for a newer tractor or older one?
Do you have a dollar amount in mind?
Can you work on your own equipment?
How close are your tractor dealers? And what brand?
Gas or diesel fuel?
Do you have a place to keep it out of the weather?

These questions are just a start

Randy

This will be our first tractor. Optimally we"d like to spend no more than $5K-$6K.

I do have some dealers near by--am not picky on the brand (looking for some recommendations on that).

I am in Central NY State so it is cold (would diesel be better than gas)?

We have a small shelter to keep it out of weather
