Just tried to start the 8n and the starter was turning well and seemed like something let go and it started making a terrible clunking sound from that area. Any ideas what broke and how to fix? Thanks

To add to Bob's comment.

I pulled the clutch inspection cover off my 65 and found the front end of a starter or most of one. I pulled the starter and it was new. Dodged the bullet! Does a 8n have a inspection cover? Aaron

Unfortunately, there's NO clutch inspection cover on the "N"'s.

Most likely, the starter drive ("Bendix") broke and/or fell off of the starter.

The starter will need to be removed, and the drive replaced.

The "experts" feel there's lots of room down in the flywheel housing to collect spare parts, but, myself, I would feel better if I could "fish" the broken parts out with a magnet.

For more info, go to the "N" board, and do a search for "removing starter", or "replacing starter drive" or "replacing Bendix" or "broken parts in flywheel housing".
