Well after a whole week of pushing snow and digging out with the ol' Massey 175 diesel, we lost the clutch last night. Just seemed to go all of a sudden like something snapped in the linkage or the finger springs broke, I was hoping for something simple but I'm afraid this might be a splitting stand job. Anybody got any ideas or places to look at before we tear into it. This is not the best tractor to use for snow removal. The split between low and high range is so big that I know the crew has been running in high range and probably slipping the clutch some . It is 63 model that we have put a ton of hours on and the perkins motor is as good as new. And hey, it is red after all and gets along with the I.H. boys here just fine. Migraine

Look inside of the plate on the bottom of the bell housing. Have someone push the the pedal and look up in the hole. I have seen the throw out bearing wear off the pressure plate fingers and have seen the rod that the clutch peadle is on come loose.

When you indicate that clutch has gone do you mean no drive, or no disengagement?
A lot of difference. May still need splitting either way, but knowing what the symptoms are is quite helpful towards getting an accurate diagnosis

There shouldn't be that much difference between low and high range. Your tractor can't be a 63 model if it's a 175. Take the the cover off the bottom of the clutch housing and see if anything is moving in there. You'll need some one to step on the clutch for you. Dave

Was just thinking. In reverse there is a difference in speed from low to high. Maybe they are riding the clutch so it won't go too fast and not letting it fully release. Tell your operators to use low range for heavy pushing. Dave

Well I been working on the old beast for a few hours and it is locked in the engaged position. I hear some grinding inside so I suspect the throwout bearing gave out or the springs broke and are lodged against the pressure plate. Does that make sense? Looks like we will try to back it on the trailer since I can get it into reverse in low range and then carefully let it off and remove the loader and blade and tear it apart. A pulling buddy agreed to help me in his shop on Monday. Had other projects I was gonna start on first but guess this one will get the attention. We need it back available asap. Sorry about the typo. It is a 1973 model. I have the original manual and delivery sheets with it from Sept 73. Any problems I should be aware off when splitting this thing? Thanks for the help. Migraine
