A truck.

A nice, warm truck with windshield wipers, a heater and a radio.

Plowed with a tractor for a couple of years, wasn't long deciding I'd rather put up with the wear and tear on my truck.

If it's not too bad, then I go with the NH LS170 skid steer. If it's getting too deep, then I break out the Ford 3930 with a 6'6" McKee blower, and a front loader.... If it's desperate, and the snow is wet, the D4H gets fired up and broken loose. That's the bank buster..... It's pushes the tops off the piles that the tractor or loader made... but I've had to plow as mush as 5 feet from the yard at times. It was 25C below that day, and it was actually the first time I could never get heat from the Cat... which normally runs hot all the time. Not fond memories..... .

Usually a 1999 Ford F-250 with a Meyer Hydro-turn plow on front. Otherwise if to deep 3 possible choices: 1) 6070 Allis Chalmers with heated cab and 7ft twin auger blower. 2) Michigan front end loader with 2 1/2 yard bucket. 3) Allis Chalmers hd-6 crawler with 7ft blade. (Use the crawler to break trail when the drifts get over 5ft around the hay stack)

GMC 4wd pickup with Fisher plow. I also do 25 or so driveways and a small parking lot besides my own and parents driveways. Also 4000 Ford with rear blade for around the barn and JD 5105 mfwd and loader if needed. I wouldnt mind a rear blower for the JD.I also have a walk behind snowblower for sidewalks , path to buildings etc.

Normally use a JD 210 with a 43 blade but the 210 is all taken apart with sheet metal at the bopdy shop. The 212 I bought to push snow with doesn't hve a front lift rod installed yet. I got my Ph. D. from Big Fred's School of Procrastination and thought I had time to put one tractor back together before snow flew.

This 16 inch surprise would have overwhelmed the JD 212 anyhow, so nothing lost there. Blower worked great. Full augur three hours straight just like in the commercials.

I'd like to have some sort of compact tractor with a loader, or at least a blade for my M.

Chet and Chuck look like a good team. Dad bought a VAC when they first got 3 point and a 6 ft Danhuser blade, also a loader made to fit over the wide front. Traded the wide front for a tricycle dual front because needed to turn shorter. Later VAC was traded for a 300 because Case had finally made a quick tach 4 row cultivator that could be used on it. But there has been a 300 or VAC running the blade around here ever since. There was some bigger loaders and a snow blower. but still the "little" tractor always did the blade work.

I'm in MA. I use a chained Farmall 504 weighing about 9000 lbs with ballast. It has a front end loader and 7' bucket.

I am putting the final touches on a IH 660 with an Elwood FWA. It is ballasted to around 15,000 lbs. It currently has an eight foot Fisher power angle blade. Looking for something in the 10-12 foot size. Would like to get a snow blower for the back and get a contract to do the school across the street. Three custodians are out there for several hours with walk behind snowblowers after every storm. I am located near an interstate exit with three hotels, five restuarants, and several gas stations. I think I could handle some of that action as well.

At my work we use a 1991 Ford 1-ton dump truck with 4 wheel drive and a 7.5 ft. Meyer plow, and an IH 584 Diesel with 2000 loader. The dump truck is usually unstoppable. It's got new tires and weighs in at about 8k lbs.... but the rear differential broke today. It's stuck until I can drag it to the shop and take apart the rear axle. Today was nothing but headaches.

Use a 1086 with a double auger 102" Lucknow snowblower. Offical snowfall overnight was 13.6". Luckily the wind was not as big of a factor as sometimes but still lots of snow to move. Snow stopped about 10am but still many rural roads are not open. In my travels today cleaning out farmsteads saw many vehicles mired in the snow. I wonder sometimes where in the world these people think they have to get to that is so important to risk life and limb. If anyone wants to make a few bucks cleaning driveways, hurry up and get to central IL. looks like a big weekend for snow plows. bill

I use a JD 4430 with a Lundel single stage snowblower. The 4430 and blower is my first choice because its warm, good radio, and it move even wet snow in a hurry. However I will use IH skidsteer and an IH 806 with Allied loader around buildings if I must. I love my Lundel snowblower, but it needs all 145hp that the 4430 has. Many don"t like lundel, but they really just need hp. It will blow even the wettest snow. I have yet to plug it.

Here in central Indiana, we typically don't get the deep snows or the repeated snows that our northern neighbors experience. But where I'm located, the roads can drift very badly. I use a '49 Farmall M with a BushHog/Freeman loader on the front. I remove the bucket and attach an 8' wide 42" high steel blade. It does not angle, but clears a nice path. For traction, I've got nearly new tires on the rear, and have a 7' box grader blade on the 3pt hitch that provides a lot of weight, and the ability to push snow backwards as well. The tractor has a 12volt electrical system with halogen lights on the front, and flashers above each end of the rear blade. Nothing fancy, but the old M will sure push snow.

I plow snow with my Polaris 4 wheeler, works okay, I also have a snow thrower, Simplicity. I would love to have a new tractor with a FEL, but too much money. The best thing to move snow with is a skid steer loader, you can pile it up good.

No body plows snow where I live, if you did it would fill in and build up until you couldn't handle it. We are inland from the west shore of Lake Huron in what is known as "The Snow Belt" and we get a lot of snow off of Lake Huron. Everyone uses snowblowers where I am, it distributes snow evenly and you don't get the "fill in" that you get by piling it. I use a 7 foot two stage single auger blower on a 52 horse tractor. It does the job, no messing around. I'm no better or no worse than anybody else here but that's what we have to use to take care of the snow..... .Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael: I know what your saying, being east of Lake Huron myself. I am far enough south though, I don't encounter it quite as bad as you see.

I've always plowed snow, and it worked very well in Atlantic Canada. Here in SW ON it never gets exceptionally cold, yet it never goes above freezing either, consequently your snow never sets and continues blowing around for days. I've seen days go by here and it never snows, yet because of that wind we are out there everday plowing or blowing.

In Alantic Canada, most snow storms end with south or almost south wind, even to point of mixing in some rain. Of course south wind on the east coast picked up gulf stream currents. You could count on 12 to 24 hours near or above freezing. One just pushed those first few snows back 35' from yard or driveway, piled it high as you could, it froze solid, and you had a perminent snow fence for the winter. Once you pile that wet snow and it freezes, one can count on it staying where you put it until it melts.

1941 Farmall A with truck plow on front, weights on rear, Monarch road equip. hyd pump gen belt driven. Not nearly the depth of snow here as in other states.Works like a charm and plows woodchips all year long.Taking small bites you can spread gravel and use it like a dozer without breaking. This Farmall tough and reliable. The previous owner fabricated the plow mount I just redid the control rod to stainless and put stainless braided lines on the pump.

94 Jeep Cherokee with a Western Uni-Mount plow. Put the grandson in with me, a cup of coffee, heater and defroster running, oldies on the radio-- and "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow."

Now--so that you don't think that I'm a total wimp--in the pre-Cherokee days, I used my Super C with a back blade, just like Paul Shuler talks about below. Still makes a great rig for cleaning up.

Our main rig is a Case IH 5140 mfd with a 7' bucket and an 8' Big Ox 3pt blade. Up until a few years ago we just used a 3pt blade for most of it but in deep snow on a 2wd tractor it seemed like we'd spend half our time trying to get unstuck. A 2wd loader tractor with the 3pt blade was a big improvement because deep snow could be pushed with the loader and the blade worked good for cleanup. Now with a mfd loader tractor equipped with a left hand reverser I think I can push snow faster than I can clear it with our twin auger 86" snow blower.

My ideal setup would probably be a Case IH MX-135 MFD with a cab, loader and creeper gear. I'd build a big 9' 4in1 bucket for the front so that just the bottom would fold up leaving a box blade and then an 8' snow blower on the back.

Ford 841 tractor with loader and a 9 foot V plow. But today it didn't want to start like it should have and I didn't get much moved before a part broke on it so tomorrow I get to try again

We don't get big boy snow down here in SW MO but my little Super C with a front and rear blade will handle anything that we get in this area. With down pressure it will even roll ice up pretty good.

870 JD 4 wheel drive, 7 ft articulated plow and a 6' grading box on the back. Push and pull at the same time. No snow amount stands a chance.

Use a 4wd JD 770 and loader. Works good as long as it not deeper than say 18" or so. If it gets real bad I use JD 310 loader/backhoe.

Hi Tim

I use my 1086 with a Badger snowblower when it gets deep. I help clear a small airport runway when they need the help.

When its light I use a 1900 4wd ford with a loader and rear 6 ft blade.

Most of the time it's the 1086.

Gary

Plow? Not up here - must be blown!

I have a 32" JD walk behind blower for my house driveway when it isn't too bad.

I have a 9 foot (mine) Farm King (Allied/Buhler) blower on the 3 pt of my brothers 4840 JD for when we get lots of snow.

What do I want? Same outfit except front wheel assist, loader on the front and a better radio!

Jay

Many years ago, i had a David Bradley 2 wheel tractor with a snow plow blade on it! WOW! What a dragger that was! Then along came a Model A Ford Doodlebug, upon which i mounted a homade plow, with manual lift. That thing worked great, but it finally went down the road-some guy needed the engine for a Model A ford he was restoring. And then, the snow didn't fall as heavily any more. A series of small Toro snow blowers came and went. Now, my neighbors like to play in the snow with their tractors, so they plow my driveways free of charge! Got it made!
