Hi

I am looking to buy a little 3 point mounted backhoe. Will be used on my MF-50 and MF-135. MF-50 has already a front hyd pump for the loader. I'm looking for a 6 foot deep capable.

Does somebody aready own one and wd like to have comments and experiences.

Thanks in advance

I have have a Bradco backhoe made by American Trencher. It is about 20 years old & a sub-frame mount, 7 foot depth. Overall it has been very usefull. It has chain link connected to a hydraulic cylinder for the swing motion. I have broken 3 chains over the years and I find it to be a bit sloppy. I bent a dipper arm cylinder several years ago and I just bent a bucket cylinder. I don't know if the bending is a brand problem or an operator problem. It does happen, I suppose. I dont recommend the chain swing.

I have used a couple of Woods 6 foot models on small compact tractors. I would think your tractor should ? be able to handle one a little bigger. The top link mount is the weak point. The one I had was sub frame mounted. Those little hoes are impressive as I just used mine to dig out 2 locust tree stumps.Just dig out far enough to where the roots get small enough to rip up and before you know it you got it out.

We have a Woods 1050. It will dig 10 feet deep. It's used mounted on a Deere 4030 tractor. In the last week, we put in 200 feet of waterline 5 feet deep, a 1000 gal concrete septic tank and 250' of drain field. We have had the backhoe for about 5 years. No problems at all with it. It has it own PTO driven pump. The top link mounting was mentioned in another post. Woods provided a new heavier duty toplink bracket for my tractor. I always use it with the backhoe. When I first considered buying the hoe, I wasn't sure how much use I would get out of it. But, it has more than payed for itself around the farm. Maintenance has been, basically, keeping it well greased.

I had a Woods model that dug 7 and a half feet deep for a few years. Really beats a shovel for putting in water lines and repairing field tile. Had it on 45 HP tractor. Also is fun to use. Get one with it's own hydralic pump. They are not built for ripping down old buildings. After 8 years, sold it for more than I paid for it new. You do not find many good used ones on the market. Bart, i have a JD 165 3 pt, made in the 70's by Bradco, it works fine. I use it on a IH 574. Whatever you get, keep an eye on the weight. Mine goes 1600 lbs, without some front weight, i could see a problem keeping the frontend on the ground.

A common brand was but don't know if still made was Kelly. They where pretty good and where small enough that they could be used on a Ford Jubilee. Has its own PTO pump or the one I sold did

Not really sure that was about 5 years ago that I sold it for a friend. All I remember for sure about it was on the side it said Kelly or Kelley Farmhand on the side of it

Years ago I had one made by Long. It was great. Had its own pto pump which it needed for the volume. Used it to bury all my water lines 6 foot deep.

I have a Long 1099. On a three point hitch, it needs a STURDY top link, preferably not conneected to the three point draft controls (and there are lugs on the differential housing of the 135 that can be used with a custom made top link) and a chain from the back hoe under the drawbar so the back hoe can use the weight of the tractor for down force. Otherwise digging just shoves the backhoe to the limits of the three point motion. I had it on my MF-135 with loader that had external hydraulics. Since then I moved the MF-236 loader to my JD 4020 (changed the valves from open center to closed center) and moved the back hoe also. I don't have the down pressure chain worked out as well, but the back hoe doesn't shove the 4020 around much.

My back hoe needs only 5 gpm, a bigger pump makes it hard to control, it moves too fast.

I had to replace a quad spool main valve in mine that I bought used and most of the hoses. I've also pulled the top pivot out of the boom and broken up the A-frame where a previous owner had tried to weld but didn't know how. And I had to replace a couple cylinders because the piston rods were pitted beyond repair.

Many thanks to all

I'm 60 and retired on a little acreage Digging with a shovel is too hard for my old back
I have many k/feet of agricultural drain to burry Trees to transplant...ditches to dig and...and..... .

The one I'm looking for: weights 650 lbs
It has heavy-duty flat top link with many holes with diagonal "V" bar from the center of this top link to the lower links so the height can be adjusted and permits down pressure with the backhoe.

Thanks to all for the comments !
I think I will "dig" in my wallet today...
