I had them when they first came out sometime back in the 70s (I think). I liked them and I'm told they've been improved. I remember our division commander (a 52 year old Major General) absolutely hated them. Said they tore up his hemmoroids something terrible. He fed his to the woodchucks.

I have fond memories of the rock-hard orange cake found in some c rations.

The C rat "Beef, spiced, with sauce", was better cold than most of them- but you never wanted to heat it up and "uncongeal" it- cause you could see all the items it was made up of- lips, veins, grissle, etc. I agree with Hayman that the ham and lima beans was about the bottom of the barrel.

LMAO!!! Ive eaten my weight in them. So much better than C rations. I still have nightmares about the C ration lima beans.

I spent a lot of time with various MASH units even though my detachment (973d) was technically part of a field hospital (1985-1995). Most of those MASH units had a mess section that could ruin anything. My unit only rated one cook for the 80 of us so mostly he made coffee and passed out MRE's. Beats the boiled salmon and raw chicken that came out of some of the field kitchens. Best though was to get some steaks, wrap them in foil, and put them on the turbochargers on the gen sets (we took 10-50KW's with us to the field).

Tim, I've had many of them during my time with the Arkansas Naional Guard. I thought they were pretty good.(If you used your imagination). When in basic traing in the air force in July of 75, we went to the rifle range one day. Had the old c-rats. Mine was dated 1947. The MRE's are a lot better.

In 1991 My guard unit, 875 Sig Bn was activated for Desert Storm. During our field training a mistake was made and about eight of us was left of the "list" to be allowed to eat in one of the mobile kitchens. A long story made short, the good ole army snuck us back on main part of Ft Hood and let us buy our on food, three days later. What I would have given for an MRE during those three days.

MRE's are great!!!! Half year in Viet Nam, eating C rations only!! You have not lived untill you have to eat ham and lima beans--- c rations.

I liked the ham-n-eggs.I found they were about the only c-rats I could stomach hot or cold.I still have night mares about the beef and grease sauce.
Now if you took your pound cake, mixed up your coffee creamer packet, poured that over the pound cake & let it soak in for a couple of hours, closed your eyes, you MIGHT think you were in the "world"having short cake & berries at grannies house.

I've eaten waaay to many. Some are pretty good, others are so-so. DEFINITELY better than the ol' C-Rats. You'd get calused opening all those cans with that ridiculous P-38 can opener. And the ham and eggs were friggin' GREEN! As for MRE's they definately need to come out with a diet version. I gained 10 lbs. during Katrina eating those things.

During basic training they mixed all the C-rat cans together in a big pot and fed it to us in the POW camp simulation. It was gross as you can imagine but I'm sure it was heaven compared to what the poor guys in the real POW camps got.

Tim

The ones they have now are pretty good compaired to the first ones. Dehydrated pork patty is #1 as one of the worst MRE"s of all time in my book. The chicken ala king was one of the first and was still on the menu when I retired in 03. One word of advice, If you eat the whole thing you have just eaten 2000 calories. The chicolet (spelling) has a laxative in it and you need to chew on it if you eat several MRE"s. If you don"t you will pay dearly.

BTW; All of our vehicles have a couple of MRE"s in the winter survival kit.

Take Care and fine dining
Merle

I though I was the only poor sap who had eaten that blasted dehydrated pork patty. I was on screw up detail at basic (Ft Bliss TX) and got them 3 days in a row.

Tim,Where did you get your hands on a MRE,and why did you have to eat one? My brother in-law is in the reserves and we have them whenever we go to the BWCA.I myself kinda like them-have even eaten the extras for supper a couple of times when I was single(livin large). Can"t beat a meal you only have to add water to.The peanut butter is a little to be desired though.

I have had far, far to may of those things. Watch out for the cheese, it doubles as a anti diarrheal medicine....so in each MRE you have 2000 calories, something to unplug your bowel ( chiclets ) and something to plug em back up if you got some bad water ( cheese spread ).

You have to be careful of that cheese spread, I know guys who had some real problems with moving anything thru their system after eating a couple packets of that cheese in a day..... powerful stuff.

The only good thing in it was the tobasco, thank god for that stuff. The rest of it tasted pretty much the same, nasty. Cover it with tobasco and choke it down as we weren't going to get anything else to eat.

Probably why when somebody offers me something to eat and I eat it, later on my wife asks me if I liked it and I will tell her 'Nope, not really, but remember I was in the Army and I will pretty much eat anything." Haha.
