Just recently bought a JD3020D with fuel gauge not working. The tractor originally had 24V system with batteries hooked in series POSITIVE GROUND but had a 12V conversion and now has NEGATIVE GROUND. Could this be why fuel gauge is not working? The JD parts cat. shows same part# for fuel gauge and sender unit regardless of ground setup. Hope somebody can help as I would like to throw away the fuel measuring stick. Thanks.

Senders do have mechanical motion and wiping contacts and they do wear out. The one in my gas 4020 did, but I was able to see the problem in the sender and fixed it with a bit of bending with fine nosed pliers.

Thanks fella's for your suggestions, I will go out and pull wire from sender and see what gauge does after grounding it. After posting this question I noticed in the topic forum that there is about 800 reponses for this problem alone. (OOPS... should have read first asked questions later) Sorry. Depending on price JD quotes me for a gauge I just may have to find me a nicer measuring stick. Thanks again for your help and have a good day eh?

Search the JD forum too as GMAN mentioned a different number gage in past post. Check with JD or if parts counter guys don't know for sure ask the shop foreman too before ordering it. If you got another sender or a variable resistance potientometer type switch laying around you can wire it to the gage and ground other side of switch and see if the gage moves back and forth properly. That will help you narrow it down if it's sender or gage or wiring also. Be sure to check the wiring from gage to sender for shorts also.

I had the same problem, found that there are two guages one for neg ground and positive. Works now that I have the right one after the conversion.

I guess the first thing I would try is to ground out the guage. If it pegs, the guage is good. You can also try to reverse the wires on the guage, because otherwise it would read backwards if at all,... I think. Otherwise, a new sender and/or guage would be in order, depending on if the guage pegs (it's good) or what is wrong. have you priced out a new sender unit?

You can get a new sending unit off ebay from the folks in Moscow Iowa, I think around $30. I put one in, it works great.

Here is a link to one of their auctions, they are raelly nice folks to work with and have LOTS of parts for the new generation tractors ( and others as well I am sure ).
