Hi,

First, thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

My father is in the process of rebuilding an International TD5 with a BD144 engine. He has a rebuild kit for it, but no manual. Is there anything online, free would be best, of course! We've found them here and at other places for ~30USD, but we're in Nova Scotia Canada, and by the time you convert and add shipping (why does it cost $30 to ship a manual??) it's close to $100CDN!!! He's going to try it without one, but I said I'd try and search online for one for free or cheaper, really all he wants now is the torque values. He just came to borrow my torque wrenches...he plans to mark the bolt positions....break them loose, tighten to the same location and record the torque to get there! Any help would be appreciated. Thnks again!

Brian

I think I gave you all the BD144 specs you need. However, there's an IH Blue Ribbon service manual for sale, right now on Ebay - in Canada - for $15 outright. It's for an IH B275 diesel tractor - but it uses the same BD144 British-Indian Mahindra engine as your's. Ebay item #290036515224
The guy says he'll ship to Canada or US for $6. Also - there's an IT manual for the same - so far at $7 - item #260056080961 .

Sounds funny to me, I just paid $22US to get a Farmall H parts and operators manuals shipped from Binder books to me in New Zealand, 10 days later NZ courier post delivered them in perfect condition.

I'm also in Nova Scotia and I know someone with a similar crawler (although it is a little newer) that they have a manual for. If you get in touch I can find out and maybe copy some of the manual and send it to you. tractorsam

Main bolts need factory specs in reply to Brian Verboom, 11-25-2006 07:08:53
I've rebuilt many BD144s - so if you get stuck on somthing - just post here - or email me a jdemaris@usadatanet.net With some of the bolts you cannot assume proper torque just by looking - especially the main-bearing cap bolts. BD144s use two different types with different torques.

All the BD144s are pretty much the same - except the early ones have in-line, air-governor BPE injection pumps, and later ones have rotary DPA CAV (Roosamaser clones) with centrifugal governors. Also, for some strange reason - most tapped bolt holes in the block are heli-coiled - not tapped directly into the cast-iron and they can be spun out if not careful. Also, many important bolts are not grade-marked, and some are drilled for wire-locking. Head-bolt torque - 75 ft. lbs. Rod-bolts - with drilled heads - 35 ft. lbs. Main bearing caps - two types use Type #1 - raised thread "Pitch bolts" 75 ft. lbs. Type #2 - Place bolts - shank and thread same diameter - 85 ft. lbs. Fuel injection static timing - 20 degrees BTDC Hot valve lash - intake and exhaust .020"

I don't know of any websites specific to your application, but you might be able to find a website or even a book that gives the torque values according to the size and grade of the bolt. If you have access to a Machinery's handbook, you will find the info you need.

Brain,

Torque values are not model or make specific. They are rated for the bolt size and thread.

So, if he has any manuals laying around which give specs for the same bolt size and thread pitch, just use those figures.

Allan

Thanks, a manual would still be great...but so by what you're saying, I should be able to find that info in a machinist handbook...maybe?
