Yipee!

Finally screwed up my courage, called the supplier and ordered all the parts for my A/C system this morning.

Fella talked me into going with the newer style rotary pump and buying the conversion kit.

However, since I carry a federal tax ID, was able to take advantage of a sizable 30% reduction in cost, so maybe this "fix-it" isn't gonna be so darned painful as I had originally thought. (I was really dreading the bottom line on this one).

Guy said that the piston type York pumps just have a heck of a time holding freon. Hmmmmm, I didn't know that. :>(

Dont throw those york pumps away-you can make a heck of a motor mounted air pump with them-do a google search on York air compressor and you'll see what I mean. Slick setup

Oh Heck Yeah,

The local Co-Op used to use 'em mounted on the NH3 nurse tanks to transfer ammonia to the side dressers. I'd use a 1,000 to 540 PTO adaptor and those things would move some gas! :>)

Yep and just put a air filter on one side and keep oil in it and they pump lots of air too. Still got one with 3 1/2 hp B&S to run it. They work great to push slow molasses out of a old propane tank to fill feeders faster :) Only problem with those Sanden compressors is when you run them out of oil and freon and get them hot they are toast but otherwise I like them. So hope you got new hoses to keep it all in there.

My cousin does offroad/rockclimbing and used one. Built a sealed tube bumper to store air so he can air up tires-get GOOD directions on building them however. You need a pressure release and guages. A guy in his club blasted apart a welded bumper because he left it running. But the slickness points with a setup like that are priceless....

I don't know what to think about that York pump deal? On the ag sites, when someone asks about converting their old York pump equipped AC system to R134a,about the first thing someone says is that you gotta toss that old York pump in the trash because the shaft seal will not hold R134a,they say Sanden is the only way to go. My old 1480 IH combine has been on R134a for 10 years with the york pump and aprox 50 ft of old R12 refrigerant hose that dates from when the combine was built in 1978. 1 can of refrigerant with hose and O ring conditioner(not stop leak),then the rest just off the shelf R134a. I always replace the tired,relaxed shaft seal that leaks around the shaft with a new $9 NAPA seal which gives me a combine that leaks about 1--12 oz can of R134a per year. I dont think thats broke,so I ain't gonna fix it with a new $300 Sanden rotary pump.
This summer the O E Sanden pump on my Steiger Panther died,and the NAPA guy said a rebuilt is $275 W O the clutch,or $325 for a new one complete with clutch. I have a pile of good used York pumps that I picked out of the salvage yards for $5-$10,and when I found one with the correct fittings to fit in place of my dead Sanden pump,I decided that it was worth fabing a mount bracket and the cost of a new pump seal to see if my luck with the Steiger equals that of the 1480 combine. The bracket was an easy 1 hr project,the original belt and hoses all fit and when I charged it,the performance was better than with the Sanden pump. With 75 degree outdoor temps ,and the blower on high,vent temps went right down to 35 degrees. About the coldest running retrofit I have ever done. I ran it for an hour or so to polish in the seal to get the best leak free fit,than parked it(seeding tractor only) untill I put it in storage this fall, a month and 1/2 later. The AC still blew ice cold. I bet it works. Tell you more after seeding the crop next year. :)

Yep,

I'm with ya 100%. Fact is, I came within one phone call of just ordering a $25 used junker out of a salvage yard.

Then, I got to thinking, what if all these guys are right and it doesn't work. I just flushed $25 down the toilet.

I dunno, people call 'em Cheapies, but I personally have never heard of one failing. Filled my old R-12 system up on the combine this summer, filled it with R-134a, and it still works like a charm after having set idle for the past decade.

So, you really have to wonder about all these horror stories,

That's what I thought.

But, this guy was from over in your neck of the woods and was really a "salesman". :>)

The newer style compressor came equipped with a clutch/pulley. If I would have stayed with the piston type, I would have had to spring for a new one in addition to the compressor to the tune of $135.

Dunno, the guy sure seemed to know his business and saved me a load of money in the process, so I didn't argue with him a bit. :>)

Seems like just about everything has gone to the rotary style pump. I think maybe that style is more efficient? Anyhow, if someone from Iowa made that statement, then it must be true!!! LOL(:

Darned if I know.

I'm not bright enough to know all those techy "ins and out" things.

All I know is that I can count money and this feller got me the whole darned system for what it would have cost me for the compressor/clutch alone in a piston type pump.

He said that they were even swapping out that old 6-cylinder Fridgeidare pump. Didn't think you could get any better than that old beast!

The older compressors weren't originally designed for the extra pressure of 134A but many been made to work with it. Had better luck with factory rebuilts for 134A than other cheap rebuilts. The new Sanden is made for 134A from the get go and new styled seals and design.

I don't have any experience with the York style, but have been told they are throw away units. Rotarys are rebuildable. Allan, I have also heard of plenty of problems with the electric fans on the condensors. Moving the condensor in front of the radiator would be a good idea. Save you lots of pain and $ in the long run.

If this factory condenser won't hold pressure, that's probably what I'll do. I'll just have to heat 'er up and see where I'm at first.

Hate to condem a good condenser tho.
