Guess I should have read your question more closely. The difference that is most prominent is that the gangs on the newer cultivators were basically self levelling. One the unstyled models, the outer gangs had a crank that raised and lowered them to match the depth and angle of the inner gangs. The cultivators that came out for the unstyled A's had round frame bars that held the gangs. The unstyled B cultivators had the square frame bars. After they went to the long frame B's they eventually quit making model specific equipment because the long frame made equipment interchangable between the A and the B.

The newer cultivators will fit on the unstyled tractors. I have a book for the newer 200 series cultivators that shows the mounting points for the unstyled tractors. If I remember correctly, you have a '38 B, which would be a long frame tractor, so you would have no problems with either the older or newer series. The catch would be finding a set with the manual lift pipes and levers since yours is a flat back. Would just be a point of preference if you wanted cultivator for an unstyled tractor for show. I sent a reply via private email a couple of days ago about the cultivator I had. Hope you got it.

I had the cultivatoe from a 37 B on my !954 model 50. I would imagine it would work the other way too.

Unsyled bolted seperately on front from each side

Styled had quick-tach frame to drive into and then bolt up with a single bolt on each side

I think you can as long as it was for a long framed unstyled B. Same cult. should also fit the model A.

Yeah Jim,

But if you unscrew those indexing knobs off the tractor, won't the old cultivator still bolt right up?

Aren't the holes in the tractor still in the same location?

Fact is, I used to tie those old JD cultivators to IH tractors' frame rails because they have the "slots".

Maybe I'm wrong; like I say, been an awfully long time ago.

Allan, best my memory one would have to remove the quik-tach frame and all associated components to mount a newer style cultivator on an unstyled JD tractor. Plus the truss rods were sloted on unstyled cultivators. Years have a way of dulling ones memory Problem I can't understand is how you with IHC experience know about a JD cultivator????? ? Tx Jim

Oh Heck,

Ran the Johns for years and years right along side the red ones. Not colorblind at all. Never have been. :>)

Been a long, long time ago, but as I reall, the 6-row beet and bean cultivator would swap between the styled, unstyled, A or B.

Heck, think it would even mount up to the 50 and 60 as well.

Darn! That was a while ago! :>)
