I made this reply to a post in TOOL TALK by jeffcat and thought that if some of you guys don't look on that board that you might like to see this info..... ..

I have used both IE and Firefox browsers since '99. I use Firefox 99% of the time as it is faster and much more secure than IE. There is a test you can go to to see how fast your internet service is. I compare IE and Firefox at least once a week, and Firefox is consistently 100 - 200 k faster download speed than IE. You can go to the link below and check your internet speed out for your self and then compare both browsers if you want. You guys with dial up might not want to monkey with it as it takes time to download the image. But, Firefox might be able to speed up things for users with dial-up. First when you get into the site, click on INTERNET SPEED TEST then on the left side click on SHUTTLE+TEXT then on the right side click on NIBBLE INFO SYSTEMS then click on RUN TEST at the bottom then just wait, a page will open with your results with a graph and will have your results highlighted with something like THIS IS YOUR THROUGHPUT or something like that.

If you are interested in Firfox just do a search for Firefox 2.0, and the best part is that Firefox is free as is IE.

I just downloaded firefox to try it out. WOW. It's like I have a new connection to the internet. It is a lot faster than IE for me. My internet connection speed went way up on the test. I try it for a while to see if I like it. So far so good.

You fellows are all right, if it works for you, that is the main thing. I am not a computer expert by no means and I mean NO MEANS. And I do realize that Mozilla hasn't been around since '99, but when it did come out, I used it and found it was faster than IE. I'm just a small full time livestock/crop farmer and have learned as I went along and when I went to hight school I did learn to type on an old manual typewriter, so that has saved tail when it comes to using the computer. What ever you do keep your PC updated to virus and spy ware.

Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Get either Avast! or AVG. Both free and both better than the ones you buy. I use Avast! and it updates itself automatically.

Couple of comments..
I Don't think that speed will vary with the browser used. I use the older Mozilla which includes a mail server rather than Firefox and Thunderbird. Consider them way bigger than I need. No way can I stand IE.

The speed issue is not related to how the browser hooks up to the internet, rather it is related to how big your browser is compared to how fast your computer is.

On old equipment, explorer will be much slower. On new stuff, there is not a noticable difference.

RAM usage is part of slowness issue - but another big one is IE is made to accept "plug-ins" - attachments that do all sorts of other things.

Since IE has 90% or more of the market, most plug-ins are targeted towards it. These can drastically slow a machine down. Some of these plug-ins slow a PC down by putting an additional load on the Internet connection - in addition to the CPU and RAM.

Also, many types of malware and viruses try to attach themselves or embed themselves in other ways in IE.

Many times, even if you successfully remove the malware afterwards, it can damage the original IE program files by changing them.

Installing a new browser like Firefox can certainly speed up certain PC's browsing - even though the link to the Internet has not changed.

Makes sence-cents,what ever. Never could spell. All ways liked things as simple as posible. Reason I stay with the smaller Mozilla. Tried Longhorn (the beta of the new OS) 3 gig to load and way too much for me.

No too sound like a smart ars but firefox has not been around since 1999. I believe the options at that time were IE, Netscape Communicator, Mosaic and some other not so very well know browsers.

The speed tests that you are going to will measure your speed from your particular location via your IP addy to there location and that is usually done with a ping. When I was on road runner I would run those tests and 99% of the time I would get something different from one minute to another. Have you ever noticed that the net is a little slower after work then it is during the day ??? That is because congestion due to increased traffic on the internet not your connection.

I personally use Mozilla because I do not like the firefox layout. I think that any browswer is better than IE due to the security issues with IE not the speed. Yes firefox has less bloatware that what IE but with a few IE tweaks ( increasing your cache ) IE can be easily made just as fast or faster than firefox. The problem with using any browser besides IE is page rendering but that is another topic for another day.

I have to agree with Dave on this one...

I feel like firefox is the superior browser to be using for any of the web browsing you do. I say this not only as someone who uses the web quite a bit, but also as someone who has worked in IT for several years.

Internet Explorer is directly tied into your operating system, and so when bad stuff comes through, it can change a number of your system settings on you, unless you have all of the latest security upgrades for it. On several systems I installed firefox, and all of the users had a significant reduction in problems.

If you notice, the new IE 7 that was just released is trying to copy the same features as Opera (another browser, the first with tabs) and Firefox. Most people download the google toolbar to block popups and do searches anyway, I guess I just prefer a browser that comes with all of that built in already.

Just my $.02.

I tried Firefox for a while and it seemed slow. Also never liked the way it did searches. So I guess I'll keep using Exploder. No extra google bars, no nothin' It just works for me.

I didn't like Firefox either. I think it's ok for the passive web browser, but for those that put their browser to the test, Firefox is cumbersome.

It seems that you have to constantly be adding upgrades to it if you want to do this or that. Explorer has them built in.

Since XP has come out, there's no need to look farther, in my never to be humble opinion.
