In a parts manual list here I see what they call a "velum" gasket. The original one was destroyed somewhat but it appears to be a thin and brittle type of material. What exactly is velum?

Vellum was also used for engineering drawings prior to the advent of computerized drawing tools. Because it's semi-transparent and tough, an original drawing done in black ink on vellum could be used to make many blueprints.

Any art supply store should have it.

I always understood vellum (with two L's) was just a paper type gasket. After a quick internet search I found this, so I guess I was about right.
In the 1890's, a professor of chemistry at Amherst College discovered that certain paper, when impregnated with a solution of glue and glycerin, was transformed into a crackle parchment-like material that was waterproof, oilproof and greaseproof. Because of it's parchment-like quality, the material was called "Vellumoid" (meaning "like vellum or parchment"). Since our humble beginnings, Vellumoid Incorporated has become a major producer of gaskets for automobiles, trucks, and miscellaneous sealing applications.

I have some old rolls of Victor gasket paper mfd in the '40's and it has a sort of watermark overprint saying Vellumoid Paper all over it. Wikipedia says it is a name now used for pigskin , leatherette and other sturdy papers used in book covers. My paper is very stiff and when I use it , I wet it first to soften it some before cutting .

I think its[a least vellum with two Ls]is used like on a Sportster oil pump when they dont want you to pinch gears even though its still possible to overtorque and do this.It might be a plastic or hard paper Im not really sure. Its probably of a specific thickness whatever it is and using gasket paper to replace it would ruin some desired clearance.Maybe someone who knows for sure will respond but Im guessing if a manual is calling for it dont substitute a homemade gasket.Ill venture another guess its on your oil pump??
