Some providers use what's know as a rolling IP, where everytime you log in it changes. For security purposes if you are on cable, wi-fi, or broadband you can use a rolling IP and a third party IP masking site (off shore), the one I use is in Sweeden.

If you are on straight dial up, or DSL it usually can run right to your computer.

If you look at the information below your name on this post you will see the IP that was used to submit the post. It's the number with the periods every third place.
Take that number and enter it in the address slot and press enter and in most cases a web page for the ISP will come up. This will usually be the service provider or the actual IP address that you were assigned when you logged on to your service.
You can also try to ping this address but if successfully will only verify that it's a valid address and most time will fail if you aren't still connected.

Bob, to the left under your name, the 3rd line I beleive that is your IP addy, now as far as ID ing someone all I know is to compare known ips from the person and they should match...unless of course they change providers, maybe someone here knows how to decode em but it aint me...Don

Yep oldcranyguy, there is somebody here that can direct us to a site that will follow an IP address, but if he gives it out he will have to go stand in the corner again. You can't give out other sites on here. By the way, I wonder how cold it got in , oh say, Wellfleet, Nebr. or someplace like that today. We got our weather from out thataway, but I haven't heard today. Oh well, maybe I'll have to check on that "other" site. Smarta$$ ain't I. Well, I have lived long enough to have that right. Bye, Harley

Thanks Howard. That looks great for us. It finally got up to 44 down here today, kinda cool, been out splitting wood and trying to figger out how to find out if my IP is really me or not. Now that I can't ask anybody to send me to another site, I just take a lead pencil out and write on the wide of the woodpile and try and cypher it out. Ain't havin much luck so far. The doggoned spiders keep coming out of the woodpile and sitting on my writin and I can't tell if it's a dot or a dash. Sure is a dilemma you started here wif day poor little dumb kid wif his eatin utensils in der lite socket. Hehehehehe Harley

And it is easy to use if you copy and paste the number in rather than type it in.
