In my opionion until NY gets rid of the DMP"s we will be seeing less and less deer every year it was dead here also this is the first year since I was a kid that I have seen this few deer. But I got lucky today with a nice 3 1/2 year old 8 pointer. I was begining to wonder if I was ever going to see a shooter this year. I counted 40 hunters in a 1 mile radious here and there sure is not that many deer. Whats one to do I guess we need to learn how to go dry now and then like the ol days. I my self think about three years without the DMP's would make a big difference. Magman

Judgeing from the number of deer I see in our soybean fields and the number my family has collected with cars there are still a lot of deer out there. The hunters want lots of deer, the land owners who have to feed them and the auto insurance companies want less. I want less. If they get rid of DMU doe permits we'll do what we have to do to save the crops.

I agree there are certain places without deer and certain places with alot of deer. But it does not matter if there are 20 or 5 they will still run into the road and get hit becuase there are twice as many cars as there used to be. I know from exsperiance that deer do less damage to crops than Squirlles, Turkey,Crows, and Racoons,I see it every day. I had a neighbor with apple trees he complained about the deer eating the buds on the trees. then that fall he had thousands of drops just sitting there rotting away I dont get it. In my area we used to have between 10 and 14 deer It was nice now they have it dropped down to 3 to 5. There just has to be a better way of doing this. The dec wants to know why hunters are not buying there licence anymore. Well the working man has about 3 to 8 days to hunt during our season and would like to be able to see an adult deer to harvest.I am not saying stop the dmps for ever just long enough to repopulate the area's that need it. There has to be a better way maybe they need to go on a town to town basis I dont know but most of the hunters I talk to are at wits end. Magman

Down here in Columbia County area the Deer are considered pests. We want them thinned out but posted properties negate it.

Six taken off my property since yesterday morning (central New York, Otsego County). Day before yesterday, I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life - standing by my kitchen window. He was nowhere to be found yesterday. A question about custom cutting. I haven't had it done in near 20 years - I just quarter them, stick them in the freezer, and cut later as needed. The local rate - for custom cutting and wrapping used to be in the $25 - $50 range - depending on what kind of cuts. I suspect it's higher now. But . . . I saw an article about the Government program to give deer meat to "needy" people. It's more-or-less, a "give your deer" to the poor program. I read the small print though, and it seems the NY State governemt, with our tax dollars, is paying over $100 per deer for the butchering. Is that correct? If so, we - the tax payers are getting robbed. I am also thinking how things have changed. 20 years ago, people would get their names put on a waiting list for road-kill deer. If a deer got hit, the people who were on the list and lived closest were called. It was up to them to get there right away, pick up the mess and deal with it. I got one once - hot summer night, I got the call. Big doe, not a visible scratch on her. Skinned it out - and what a mess. Ended up getting one piece of meat from the filet mignon area in the back and threw the rest out.

We only charge $45. thats cut wrap spices for ground. I know there are other places that are charging 60-70 then charge for extra special cuts not sure what they are, I think it is highway robbery. We don't get involved with donating deer for the hungry but I think my friend down the road does and there are many others that do it too, but I haven't heard of charging $100. for butchering I am sure that there some that are doing it, makes me sick to see people would take advatage of things. Where I skin deer it more or less is a hobby we aren't looking to get rich, they have done butchering for years I think they do it out of habit and seeing the people, Have met alot of people over the years that you normally wouldn't have met, they all are very nice people.
