I know there are others on this site that drive trucks to make a living. Over the last 9 years I have gotten close to one million miles in a straight truck 99% after dark. Hey guys and gals before you take off in your car or pickup and pulling your trailer, do a walk around and see if all your lights are working. I seldom have a night that I don"t see a car or pickup and pulling trailers without tail lights or turn signels that are not working.

Jimmy you are correct, however it would be nice if the auto designers and engineers would make it easier to access and change bulbs and fuses. Most people have no clue how to take off some of these newer lights. I think some of these newer cars are over engineered.

Hey Jim if the Law dogs would hit the normal man the way they do the truck drivers there would be a lot mre cars out there with all there lights working but because there truck drivers they get singled out as being the bad guy. Not fair but thats the way it is. Yep I agree people should check and double check there lights tires etc every time they turn the key. Had a friend rent a trailor yesterday and he couldn't get the lights working right so he stopped by my place, 30 minutes later all lights and all where working. Kepp it safe of stay off the road is the only way it should be for ALL cars/trucks/trailors. I even think D.O.T should start hitting up every one for bad lights etc.

Jim: I am in complete agreement with you, amazing how some folks drive and are familiar only with steering wheel, key, gears shift and pedals. they drive in poor visability with no tail lights. Yes, those tail lights may only give the driver behind about 3 seconds warning, but at 60 mph, 3 seconds is a long time.

I think the time is long overdue where every driver be require to do a circle check, less complicated than truckers but at least sign a document being sure all lights are working, all tires are inflated properly and showing that they understand what lights come on when car is placed in ign on or drive. I recently spoke with a driver who had owned his car 3 years. He had no idea the tail lights on that model did not come on with driving lights. Hard to imagine someone could own a car 3 years and not discover that. I did notice he had two cell phones and a sound system that would match any concert hall.

On a 6 lane one day I came upon construction where the requested speed was 80kph or 50 mph. They were working in the medium but had supply trucks on right shoulder, thus workers were having to cross traffic lanes ocasionally. I slowed to requested speed limit with tractor trailer, in the right lane. All that did was cause 3 lanes of traffic to funnel into 2 lanes, to get the H@## by me. One guy in a Jaguar went by me doing at least twice my speed. I later talked with a DOT official. First I gave him an earfull about enforcement in construction zones. I said construction workers deserve better than this. In the end I told him, the only way I'd work on highway maintenence, was be allowed to carry a machine gun, and be allowed to use it. I once had to change a tire on the side of one of these roads, in icy, slush coditions, took me all of 10 minutes. I can't imagine putting an 8 hour shift out there.

Hugh, the State of Missouri has a new law with big signs at the side of the roads telling about it. If you hit a worker it is a $10,000 fine and loss of licence for 1 year they still don"t slow down. The man that rents our land where we live lost his son about a month ago. He was a MO DOT employee, and was putting up sign decating a portion of I 44 to a State Trooper that was killed in the same spot, when a car hit him while he was out of his cruser. Missouri has a move over and slow down law when you see an emergency vehicle. The truck driver I don"t think was charged with any thing that killed William because he did step out in front of the truck. He was 35 and left two little boys.

Jimmy: I like the Michigan construction zone signs, fines about the same level as your Missouri fines in addition to 15 years, and they patrol and enforce it. It's truly a pleasure to drive and even truck in Michigan. Most of their 4 and 6 lanes have the dual speed limit 55 for trucks and 70 for cars. A lot of truckers growl about the 55, however I find cars are never in your way at 55, and a loaded truck will do better averageing 55 than going from 30 to 70 in conjestion. Many times with loaded tractor trailer, I've set my cruise at 55 coming out of Port Huron MI on I-94, and never touched brake or accelerator until I hit the exit for I-75 in the center of Detroit.

I liked another sign I saw in New York, forget the exact wording, but something like illegal to run with windshield wipers on without full lights. If I remember correctly the fine was $500.

Here in Ontario, anything goes, I've driven for weeks and never seen a police cruiser. They have signs say fines are doubled in construction zones. But you know what, double nothing is exactly nothing.

I was coming home one night, snowy and icy on 402. Between London and Strathroy they fight over ditch space in bad weather. Visability was down to about 6 tractor trailer lenghts, trucks had backed off to 50 mph. cars and SUVs were still whizing by at 70 mph. To give you some idea how icy it was, the empty rig I was driving was a 460hp Cummins 2 lift axles raised putting more weight on tandem drives and a cherry picker over the drive wheels. Probably the best traction of any empty truck on the road. If you stepped the accelerator at 50 mph in high gear that rig would spin. That's damn icy, even if you driving a loaded Hummer.

As far as that slow down and move over law. Why doesn't it include any vehicle that is stopped alond the side of the road?

Just a bit of info for these guys, go to Harbor Frieght and pick up a set of magnetic lights just in case you have troubles. They are only about twenty bucs and sure come in handy in a pinch.

I think I paid a bit more than that at O'Reillys for my magnetic lights and so far I have not used them, but they ride along in the tool box just the same. One of these days I will need them.

I also add reflective tape though small trailers aren't required to have it because sometimes the lights do go out.

And they make it very simple to adjust the headlights when pulling a trailer. I sure wish folks would use that adjustment.

Gosh, I thought everybody knew that they did away with turn signals right after they moved the control from the floor boards to the steering column. Too many people getting in wrecks from getting foot caught in steering wheel trying to dim lights.Chris

Well I'm a newbie I know, but I never saw turn signal controls on the floor. Dimmer switch, yes, but not turn signals. Those are even on the steering column in my 76 Ford truck.

Turn signals??? Do you mean that those are still installed on vehicles? Where I live it seems that obviously useless item was replaced by the mandatory cell phone.:) Cosmo

I had a Cincinnati PD officer tell me once that Ohio doesn't require turn signals. I didn't believe him but most Cincinnatians believe that.

Working on machines as a field mechanic I don't rack up nearly as many miles as you, and the majority of mine are daylight miles, but I definately know what your talking about. I'd also like to add to at least make a visual check of your tires to see if one is running lower than the others. Countless times I'll get behind someone and from 50 yards off I can tell by the way the tire is buldging out at the bottom that it's slack. They ride along oblivious to the wear/damage being done to the tire and the resulting hazard to themselves and others should that tire decide to blow..... As they've told me for years, Jimmy, "Keep the rubber side down and the shiney side up, and be safe"..... . Wayne
