I want to know if those old belt driven corn grinders would grind ear corn or only shelled corn? Been thinking I'd like to have one to make chicken feed with.

For chicken feed you DO NOT want to grind the cobs with the corn, use ONLY SHELLED CORN for chickens, they could not handle the cobs

If you scatter scratch feed for the chickens, they'll avoid the ground cob...chickens are industrious critters. Now if using a trough feeder, I agree the corn should be shelled before cracking/grinding.

Are you talking about a hammer mill or burr mill grinder? The hammer mill will grind both. You use different size screens for size of final product. The burr mill will grind cob corn if it has the cob crushers ahead of the burrs. You vary the size of product by adjusting the closeness of the burrs. Have used both.

Will,

I had a burr mill in mind, but a hammer mill would be welcome as well. The hammer mill that was on our place was sold before I was old enough to watch it work....been gone over 40 years. It was a John Deere...I remember that, and it seemed like a pretty good sized machine....bigger than I'd need. They ran it with the old '46 Oliver RC60.

Dad had an old IH grinder whenI was a kid ("60s) and we ground both shelled and ear corn. The C would grind shelled corn as fast as anything, but it would make the 350 work with ear corn. Only problemwith that one is it would grind faster than the blower would take it away.

I have an older New Holland belt driven grinder I use all the time and it works great on ear corn. I even grind the cobs alone after shelling corn to use for bedding.

You fellers are always great to answer my humble questions. Thanks very much. Now, to just find a grinder! I have plans on running it with my Super A. I had my eyes on an old PTO driven sheller but it was just too far away from eastern KY. My JD 1B sheller has been converted to electric and it does fine for what it is.....sure would be nice to shovel it in instead of one at a time. If you never seen a hand cranked sheller driven by a 1.5 HP motor..it's a hoot! I installed a 16" compressor pulley and a 1.25" motor pulley...the motor is 3450 rpm. A 1725 rpm motor would have been ideal...but you use what you have:). As it is, it throws the cobs about 10 feet.
