I may be spelling it wrong, but I seem to remember seeing some large farm tractors at the Illinois State Fair back in the late 40's - early 50's and they were called Shepherd Diesel .. Any information or pictures would be greatly appreciated ...

There is a national Sheppard Diesel Club that is quite active. We hosted them at our club in Penfield in 2004. One of their officers lives in Shelbyville I think. Do the Google search, there is a lot of information and some great pictures available on the net.

They made stationary and marine engines before they built tractors. They had a marketing push to install their engines in tractors of that era, such as F-30's, and produced a conversion kit to install a diesel engine in an "M". I have an F-30 with a Sheppard engine. Their website has a history section for both tractors and engines. I believe it is now called "RH Sheppard Company" and they make power steering parts for other manufacturers. Their website has a neat, but brief, history of the company. It is my understanding their tractors were very innovative and well built, but expensive.

Sheppard was from Pennsylvania and produced tractors with diesel engines of their own design from about 1949 until 1956 although I remember seeing ads in farm magazines for them until about 1958. I remember that because we were shopping for a new tractor in 1958 and I stopped at a Sheppard dealer and all he had was a big poster on the wall showing the SD-4. It looked pretty snappy and, as I recall, it had a tannish, greenish (?) paint scheme which was a departure from their traditional orange. He had no tractors in stock and was rather evasive about when he would be getting any new ones. Sheppard stopped building farm tractors and concentrated on building power steering units, mostly for trucks. Sheppard had pioneered power steering for farm tractors in the early 50's. I heard later that many of their tractors suffered from rear end problems. Now you know all that I know about Sheppard.

I believe it's spelled Sheppard rather than Shepherd. Do a Google seach and I think you will find some information on them.
