I finally started up the old 966 today. I a pretty good hyd leak between the battery boxes ( not coming from the steering shaft) after moving the tractor it stopped. But my question is that while going down the road the left front tire spindle wobbles. The big nut on top of the spindle is good and tight so I"m guessing there is some type of keyway thats worn ?

I've fixed several spindles by cleaning up the arm and spindle with Brake cleaner and JB welding them. My Dad has a 1066 that has over 5000 hours on it since I JB welded the arms to the spindle. The arms are just as tight as the day I fixed them.

Rather then welding them solid which i realy hate as SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NOT OWEN WELDERS , A&I makes a undersized arms for this perpose and i have had vary good luck with useing them . Remove the old one and replace with and undersized unit put the nut back on a tighten it back down and then there is a 1/2 inch clamp bolt that pulls it tighter . That oil leak can only be comming from the steering shaft seals and that is a 15 dollar repair , as they will leak like that sometimes and then stop lift the rubber dust flap up under the steering wheel and take a look . Now three time is twenty years i had to replace the BIG rubber seal that goes around the steering motor and this could also be the problem.

Marv After roughly aligning the front end a fellow drilled through the spindle and inserted about a 3/8 in. roll pin with an other two pins in that one. He could disassemble it but still had a very solid front end. He then realigned the front end.

The top of the spindles are splined and over time the splines will wear producing the wobble your seeing. The best two options I"ve seen to fix them is to either replace them or weld them. I"ve had good luck removing the nut and after grinding it clean running a couple beads around the top of the spindle using 7018 rod. We"ve got a 1086 and a 1066 that I welded the spindles several years ago with no problems. I figured if I ever need to take them apart I can cut them apart and put new parts in then so I didn"t have anything to loose by welding them.
