When I first started putting on tractor driving compititions for our non for profit club, I went out and tried to get $30 a event for pay out. Thats $15 for first, $10 for second, $5 for third. I tried to get $30 a sponsor. That was very hard to get and now I have 14 events. 14 x 30 = $420. Over the years we kind of just did it for fun, but I feel like we need to do something. Any thoughts on were to turn for sponsorship money. By the way yes I also donted to the fund, our club doesent make beans for the show, and we charge no entery fee and doubt that we would have much participation if we did.

Chances,

I hope this isn't too simple to bother with, but here we go. What we're talking about here is advertising expense. If your sponsor is making 10% profit on his gross sales, and if he gives you $30.00 of his advertising money, he is going to have to gain $300.00 of NEW business from that $30.00 that he gave you just to break even. That $300.00 of new business has to be business that he would not otherwise have gotten had he not given that $30.00 to you.

So, when you go to a business to ask for their advertising money, you have to have thought through the idea of how your event is going to get NEW business to that sponsor. And if you can develop a reasonable rationale for that, you can present it to the business owner and reasonably expect him to sponsor you. Otherwise, he probably isn't going to be too interested in just giving you his money because he's a nice guy.

Good luck with your show.

Lots of bussinesses are making enough that they are going to pay through the teeth to Uncle Sam and will sponsor/advertise just to cut taxes down and if they get extra bussiness too, that's OK but some don't require it. Most bussiness' throw away more money on lesser things.

I have an uncle in the fertilizer/grain business.

he gets hit up all the time and I know he's not really that well off (oh he's not in BAD shape but not like the large corp dealers)

the local ADM no longer buys at the 4-H auction.. orders from THE TOP! and limited sponsorship of anything...

so where are you going to go...

I myself dont see the need to get sponsors.. If you dont want to Play BRIBES are not good either.

Try your local feed stores, tractor dealers, or anyone associated with farming. Some will give gift coupons or free merchandise for the priviledge of putting up abanner with their name on it.

Our area businesses have gotten tired of getting hit up by every organization who think they have a worthwhile cause to support. We are in our 5th year of drought and the small businesses are hurting financally just like the the farmers and ranchers are. I think they have gotten tired of seeing a load of high school kids come into their business because they know they are going to get asked to donate to something, and they have to or they might lose some of "daddy's" business.

In addition to just letting them put up a banner you might have a place they could set up a booth to display what they sell or do. It is more work but I have found that meeting potential customers to be much more effective than hanging a sign. One of my best (and cheapest) advertising was setting up a booth at the local John Deere days. Put me right there with the people who needed my services.

if you go where people gather up it don`t matter if it is a street fair or a rodeo, the line is always backed up where the food and drinks are sold .if your bunch won`t run the consession hire a cooking crew, then all you have to do is count your money
