with all the helpfull knowledge on this site i figured i shoot this out to you guys. this has been a on going headache for months now.
1994 dodge caravan 3.3L. what would cause the fuel pump to get intermidiate power only at start up??. when the van starts it will run fine all day. this has happen 4 times within the last 4 months. the van has been starting and running fine for the last month. my wife got stranded a week ago when the fuel pump would not turn on. i had it towed home and pulled the fuel pump out of the tank for the 5th time. fuel pump tested ok. put it all back together and now the van will start and run fine. i hooked up a test light to the pump wire harness with the wire unplugged. it seems i am getting intermidiate power to the fuel pump plug. when it died last time i was getting the intermidiate 3 seconds of power back to pump, but the pump would still not kick on. thats why i had it towed and pulled the tank again. all symptoms lead to a bad fuel pump. but when it starts i could drive acrosss state without any hesitation. the promblom acures only at start up. in the past i have worked in 3 different service garage's growing up over a 12 year span , and worked with alot of great mechanics that showed me the ropes. i could tear down the van and put it back together with no promblom, but this fuel promblom has me stumped. maybe im just over thinkin here.. update: i have tryed smacking the tank with a rubber malet. it doesent do anything. i bench test the pump with direct power and it works every time. when i turn the key to the on position you are supposed to hear 2 clicks from the relays. but it only makes one click when it wont start. i tryed changing the relay and it does the same. if i get lucky and keep turning the key on and of untill i hear the 2 clicks then it will start. but for a hole day i tryed it and all i got was the one click from the relays. i would come out the next day turn the key on and i would hear the 2 clicks and the van would start and drive for another week or up to a month. then out of the blue it would act up again with a no start and one click from the relays.

Have you installed a new pump? These pumps are noted for giving up at times.IF you have power and ground at the pump and it doesn't run -bad pump. The commuter grounds the fuel pump relay at key on if no cranking signal it turns off after may be 2 seconds, You can turn the key on and off three times with no spark and then the relay won't try to run pump. The tank needs the rubber hammer while cranking. If you are not getting power to the pump run a jumper wire to coil + and I think you will run pump direct, check and see. One problem can be a bad wire connection (4 way by the rubber flap where the wires go thru the frame. This is from memory long time since I 've worked on one.I can give you the wire colors if you aren't sure which wire does what. The relay can be jumpered if you know the pin outs. Sorry no egr, circuit breaker or solenoid will cause pump not to run. e-mail if you need help that I need to look up. david

Not sure if this helps. We have a 2003 Caravan.
Had intermitent starting problems.
After having every mechanic around give up on it. It turned out to be the computer was going. Thats a nice gift just after warantee.

Wild shot in the dark- is there a self reseting circuit breaker in that circuit. They go bad. Also, there may be a resistive short causing that circuit breaker (if there is one) to cause an intermittent condition.

Check the oil pressure sending unit.

On the earlier Caravans I believe the pre-start operation of the pump was controled by a mechanical relay that had an internal heating element that allowed it to run for so long a time and then shut it off if the engine hadn't started. Another thing to check is the ground for the fuel pump.

I'm usually in the A/C section, but saw this and thought I might be able to help. My van(97 Dodge Caravan) did this about 2 months ago. Come to find out there is some kind of solenoid on the pump unit that was working intermittently. Bad thing was I had to replace the pump to replace the solenoid. Your symptoms sound just like mine and the tech I took it to is a friend of mine and a 5 star dodge mechanic(did the work after hours)and said that there has been a lot of these solenoids going bad. Hope this helps.

Just a note. No codes were present in the computer and it was not an EGR Valve.

Perry,

I still think you are scratchin' around in the wrong area.

Those things are notorious for having a nasty, nasty habit of the EGR system sticking open with no rhyme nor reason and at the most inopportune times. Problem is totally undetectable while rolling down the road too, so you think nothing is wrong.

She won't start without vacuum.

Allan
