I've noticed that the majority of dealers often refuse to state a price for "used" implements and tractors, when they place ads in my weekly Shopper,.... most of them simply say "CALL".

I've also noticed that here on YST,.... the dealers often use $0000.00 as a price in their ads.

Why they do this, are they embarassed of their "prices"?

I've often been interested in some of the things they advertise for sale, but I absolutely refuse to "call" them if they can't bother to place a price for me to see in their ads.

I just thought of what to do !!! When they have in the ad $000.00 call them up and say you will take it for the advertised price !!! $000.00 I"ll even pay the sales tax on that one.

I look at it like this, no price up front, no business from me. Put the price on it and mark it as is, or with warranty. If there is a trade be up front with trade value. That's the way I do business and that's the only way business should be done.

Like the others said, it can be a sales ploy. Sometimes it's a recent trade and they just got it in, have not done all the repairs on it- might find some major internal expense and are covering themselves.

I don't know why they do that. I guess they have different prices for cash and trades. In other cases they might just be fishing to see what they can get. I can't really blame them for that either. Some items have a very wide price range simply due to interest in the item. You could well advertise something at a "fair" price and get no interest. You could advertise it "cheap" and get a lot of calls from tire kickers. I've put "fair" prices on stuff before and got nowhere with it. Right now I've got a guy looking at an old truck. I told him to make an offer. If it's reasonable, I'll accept. If not, we'll deal. If he want's it for nothing, it's going to sit for a while longer...
For the record, some of the best deals I've gotten were on items that had no listed price. Just call up, negociate... I've gotten stuff for 2/3 the asking price like that. Some of the worst deals I got were on listed prices that the dealer simply would not move on. The way I see it... If I'm interested in something, I'll call. If it's too high, I can always walk away.

Dealership that I used to work for would never list their prices. They would always give their "buddies" the best price, even then they were ripping the guy off. Then if some "city" guy came in wanting to buy a tractor or something, they would really clean his clock on price. After I started farming I went there to price something and was willing to pay cash if I got a good price. The price they gave me I could tell they didn't even want me in the showroom, musta ripped off enough "city" guys to keep the lights on that day.

I've got to admit that the "one and only" experience I've had with my local IH dealer, involved calling to see if they had a carburator kit for a Farmall M. They quoted me a price of $37.00 over the phone, so I sent my wife to get it. When she returned home, she was madder'n a wet hen, she said there were 4 men sitting behind the counter (talking) when she got there, and none of them would even acknowledge she was there until she said she had come to pick up a caburator kit. When she went to pay for the kit, the price jumped to $57.00,.... she said her husband was quoted a price of $37.00 over the phone,.... and they said, they had quoted me the price of the wrong kit over the phone.

She went ahead and paid the $57.00 because it is a 36 mile round-trip to town, and figured I really wanted it anyway.

I don't know how someone using such "business practices" stays in business, they'll certainly get no more of mine. In fact, I'd rather travel 150 miles to buy what I need from a different dealer, and who'll give me the "impression" that they appreciate my business.

I won't even look if there is no price. They don't list a price because no one at all would call if they did.

I agree, it's the cash- trade thing. They want to feel you out before they commit. If they advertised a tractor or implement for their best price and then you called with a trade you would be mad when they would only allow you $50. So they inflate their price to make you happy. Delivery is another thing they have to tack on without you thinking about it.

If the price isn't listed I assume the seller is ashamed of how high it is and I share his shame by being too ashamed to call and ask.

I understand it's a money game, but at least for me, I tend to learn to just skip even reading the print ads in the local farm rags that don't bother to list prices.

Aloha, If you see the price for the item, and it is not what you want to pay, then you will go someplace else. If you call, the dealer will try to negotiate with you, Ex. what was the best price you got? Ok, I can do better than that and he adjusts his price.

It seems to me,.... that if the price of what they are trying to sell is "fair and resonable" to start with, they wouldn't hesitate to state the price in their ads.

Maybe I'm just not up on their way of doing business. :>(
