i am restoring a to 30 ferguson which has the original (I think) M.S. carb. Since I want to do it right should I replace it with the updated zenith or continue the marvel schebler carb. The tractor goes from idle to wide open within an inch of throttle movement.

I don't know which is the better carburator. But, "The tractor goes from idle to wide open within an inch of throttle movement" sounds to me more like a governor problem that a carburator problem.

You can get most all parts to fix the MS carb you have. Lot of the Zenith replacements now days are a universal fits all carb that has a universal linkage on it you'll have to make fit when you get it. Some work well and some don't because of that so I'd just try to fix the original if you can. See how worn the linkage and throttle lever is under dash and fix that first maybe.

If it was me I would stay with the MS carb they are hard to beat and they are easy to find parts for also. The problem it has sounds like linkage or govanor problems not the carb

To me the main thing to think about is wether your wanting to restore the tractor as completely origional and it's not gonna be run alot or wether your restoring it to actually use. If you want totally origional then the MS is gonna be the way to go and you'll just have to live with it not running perfectly all the time til you can get it "right", if your even worried about that. I get the impression though your wanting it to use, not just show, and in that case I'd say definately update and go with the Zenith, but put the old MS away in a box for future consideration. The main thing, to me, is the Zenith is gonna be alot easier to find parts both now and in the future when it needs a rebuid than the MS. Just my .02
