How many of you fellas can remember when it was recommended that you would have to put at least 100 hrs/year on a tractor in order to justify buying a diesel over a gasser?? That was all the buzz when I bought our Super Dexta (diesel) in 1963.
BTW, Allan, I have to side with the higher hour crowd. I think one factor which leads to higher hrs is the land you're working. Our county is all clay while our neighbours enjoy sand --- the difference between night and day in annual worked hours.

Only 100 ? I thought you had to run them 500 a year or more to justify owning them but yeah it depends on type of farming and operation too like Allan said. It was either a real wet year or real droughty dry year if we didn't put over 500 on one of several during boom irrigation farming days but equipment was smaller, fuel was cheaper and ahhh grrrr everything was cheaper so we did things different too. Well south of here where the ground is sandier they always put way more hard hours on a tractor when fighting sand on windy days when we did more consvervative tillage in tighter soil and ours wouldn't be blowing but yeah every year could be different.

Dunno,

Number of acres in the operation, croping practices, length of growing season, irrigated or non, number of tractors doing the work all are deciding factors I guess. :>)

I couldn't agree more on the soil type factor.
In my youth our neighbour had 4 Belgian draft horses pulling his single bottom 14" plow; and he had a relief team of another 4 which got hitched to the plow after lunch. Speaking of clay...
Where I live now, a similar plow used to be pulled by a single horse, all day long. Guess the soil type here :-)

Hendrik , my grandfather used to say that this old clay could get so hard, a sow would have to double-up to root ----- now that's hard !!
