How do you guys do it? More ponies? I run 410 gears with the 5 speed overdrive. 5.7 Hemi gas guzzler. This outfit weighs just over 11k empty, I suppose I was running around 21k loaded. Ran 65 MPH most of the day but when I hit Nebraska the speed limit is 75. Guess what guys? It won't do it. About 70 on leval ground (I think the Platte Valley runs uphill something like 12 feet to the mile)is all it wanted to do. I had some Iowa gas that wass bogging me down and once I got rid of that I did get it to do 75 for a while but then later in the day it dropped back to that 65-70 range.

Glad to hear you are home. I was thinking about trading my diesel off. I didn't think I could afford to buy a new diesel so I was going with the hemi. I have since changed my mind and will keep the diesel and bought a little foreign 4x4 to drive to work. You have just made me very happy about my decision. Thanks Cowman

Hi Cowman, the only thing you are missing out on is the Diesel. I am just under 14K empty, and 29+ fully loaded, and running 75mph is no problem with a manual trans and 3.54 gears. In my opinion, the higher gears are a waste of time and money because with the 3.54s you already have more power than you have chassis and brakes. In real hills I do have to go real fast or slow down a little and pull in 4th, but you can still run the speed limit without winding it hard. Seems like the wind will pull it harder than the load. Pulling hard at speed is not a problem, the trouble starts when you get comfortable at 75mph and some idiot passes you because his left turn is only 1/8 mile ahead, or pulls out in front of you. I only put on about 10K miles a year, and I am seriously considering shortening an old farm straight truck just to get some real brakes.

Mine is an F350 4x4 crew dually, 7.3D auto, 4.10 gears, 60hp chip and 4" exhaust. With 16000lbs behind it, it"s no dragster off the line, but it will run 75 easily. I will never go back to gas. Can"t see any disadvantages with a diesel truck. Just my .02

Well when i was out buying tractors and equipment i had a 88 Ford F350 4X4 dualy with a 460 with a 5 speed and 4.10 gears . Now the truck weighed in at 7500 and the trailer weighed in at 7500 so empty weight was 15000 and most of the time i was pushen well over 30-35000 . As for the road speed just how fast did ya want to run as the 460 would run the speedometer out of number if ya wanted to , power was not a problem and fuel milage was always wright around 10-10.5 loaded as the harder ya ran her and the faster ya went the better the fuel milage as i always trye to keep her running around 3200-3500 RPM as this is where a 460 likes to live and since the 5 speed was not made for haulen in overdrive she spent a bunch of miles in 4th . There were times that she would set at 4000 rpm for several hours when i was in a big hurry late at nite and no bears around . That old truck darn near burnt up old US 30 I 70 , Us 40 and US 24 , and US 36 and I 71 and when i felt real welthie the Buckeye GREEN STAMP And the Indy Toll Road along with may back roads thru Ill and Indy.

Max out your tire pressure on the truck and trailer. You said that the gas made a difference. Have you tried premium? Under such a heavy load the computer will retard timing and change fuel maps and you may notice some gains with a load of premium. Is your air filter new? I modify the air intake to let more air into the air cleaner. Ever one is different but you can ussually trim the inlet to open it up a little. What RPM's are you running? I wont be suprised if 3000 rpm feels right. I went to a diesel truck but the only thing it does good is pull. I think they stink for everthing else.

Humm, No, I never tried premium, might try it the next time. It runs about 2500 @ 70 -75 MPH in overdrive. If I stay in high I hit 3000 @ about 65 and I hate to run it all day that hard. Besides that I have straight pipes and it gets awfull noisey above 2500.

What kind of tractor is that? That come all the way from Pa? I've always had gas trucks as well, pretty quick off the line. After riding with a neighbor a few times in his diesel, I was amazed at how much that thing could pull. Josh

I had a 2002 3/4 ton Dodge with the 360 in it. I was more efficient using mid grade than anything else. I got a 34' goosneck and it never passed many gas stations. No I got a 2006 Diesel 1 ton dually and like it real well.
