Obviously off topic- some others are too. I have a 1988 compact import with 140K miles, bought new. For last 6 years, have driven only about 3K miles per year with it. Interior is all good except dash panel vinyl has cracked. Tax office says worth $500- so low taxes. Needs some work now, CV joints bad, rack and pinion steering leaking, AC compressor bad, needs paint badly, maybe $2K total. But if I took $2500 and bought another car, I probably would have poorer car than if I sent the money on mine. And new one depreciates more than $2500 the first day! This one should last another 20K-30K easy, which would be about when I should stop driving. So give me your opinions.

Good point. But I have 4 other vehicles that I also drive. So my total annual mileage is quite a lot more than just 3K.

You can't beat a beater!
Sold my '93 Geo Metro last year...best vehicle I've ever owned and don't expect I'll ever own a better one. In 10yrs never had to take it to the dealer for anything I couldn't fix myself. Did a timing belt and replaced a CV which probably didn't need to be done. Was getting 50 mpg. Nothing wrong when I sold it, just couldn't get the family in it anymore. Fix it and park it next to the cart corral at the supermarket with no worries!

Just spent $1000 on a 1987 VW Jetta that is worth $1700. Struts, rear shocks, and CV joints. The body and interior are in excellent for a 20 year old car. It has 248,000 mikes on it, doesn't use any oil between changes, and runs like a top. Even with a brand new replacement engine, I will come out way ahead over buying another(newer) car.

Depending on what it is, it could go another 100.000 plus easy. My dad had a Toyota pickup that when he sold it had 350,000 on it and it was still going, ya it smoked but it still started up every time you want to go some place

Aloha, If you do some of the repairs yourself you could save some bucks and come out ahead. How"s the transmission and engine? I would probably keep it because I do a lot of repairs myself but you have to remember, old cars needs a lot of attention (things starts breaking down one after the other) and money.

I'd keep it and drive it until the wheels fall off.

I would fix the cv jionts and rack and pinion and use the 260 ac and keep on driving, if the paint really bothers you then have a cheap paint job done. A friend of mine once gave me a plymouth colt, didn't look great but ran good, I drove it for several years, my son drove it to college for a year and then I gave it to another friend who need a car bad.

If you like the car have the CV joints done (or done by yourself) and keep it. The devil you know is better than the one you don't.

What brand/model is it? If it's an 1988 Kia get rid of it, an 1988 Corolla keep it.

Absolutely. Some of the Japanese cars are just broken in at 140K, and will go a lot farther. Possible reasons to quit using one: bad automatic transmission or bad rust, both of which may be too expensive to fix. If the engine and transmission are good, rebuilt CV axles are not that expensive and often air conditioning and other leaks can be fixed fairly cheap. Lots of cars built about that time had problems with the paint not sticking very well to the primer, and look really bad now. Maaco or some other low cost paint shop could probably make the car look pretty good for much less than $1k.

I'd fix it if it wasn't too bad. But then I usually drive a 10 year old Mazda that got a new paint job a couple of years ago. 31mpg, reliability and super cheap price. Do I really care if it is an old beater? Not hardly. It is just great for running errands that don't require the hauling capacity of the big pickup and its 10mpg. It's old too, but works fine for what I ask it to do for me.

I try to keep my wife in a fairly new car that is completely reliable and nice. Keeps her happy and also I don't have to worry about her then. Good luck!

You just saved me the trouble of typing almost exactly the same thing!

I drive a 94 del Sol with 125k on it, the Mrs. has an 01 Accord with 89k. Two months of payments on a new car will rebuild anything on my del Sol! And save big $$ on insurance too!
