I've tried posting this on Ford site but it's not showing up. This is a Ford 961. I can't get spark. I have a new coil, new electronic ignition, new rotar, new plugs, plug wires appear to be good condition. The rotor turns properly. I'm getting guice to and from the coil (+ and -). The distributor cap appears good and looks new. There was no spark before I changed all this either. thanks for any suggustions.

Make sure to check the little stud that goes through the side of the distributor. Had a 600 that was grounding there and took a while to find it.

For a start, short circuit all the distributor side and plugs and plug-leads by checking for spark on the HT lead (from the coil) to earth.
Second, if you can"t get a spark from the Ketteringham system, you will probably have the same fault on the EI circuit.
The original ignition is so simple that anyone with any minimal test kit can fault-find easily.
Go back and get it working by systematically working through the circuit. All components, what few there are, are easily checked by a simple meter with volts, current and resistance ranges. It is just a matter of finding where the system is interrupted.

To answer a few of the questions below. The tractor is a 12 volt negative ground. The coil uses an external resister. I did not change all these items at one time. I first tried to get spark by using the what was on the tractor, i.e. points, condenser, etc. but no luck. I then changed the coil with no luck, then adjusted the points and then changed to electronic ignition. I got the electronic ignition according to the one listed on this site for the 12 volt negative ground. I followed the directions for installation in the package using the external resister which is still in place. I checked the fire going to the resister and coil and coming out of the coil and the tester does light up properly. I have not checked the big wire coming out of the coil though. The EI installation seemed straght forward so hopefully no problem there. thanks for the replies.

Jrry,

When using a Pertronix module with a coil that needs and EXTERNAL resistor, connect it up like this:

Third Party Image

That gets full battery voltage to the module's electronics, yet protects the coil and module from excessive current with the ballast resistor.

Check this:

Test light to (+) terminal on coil and ground... should light with key on, remain lit while cranking.

Test light to (-) terminal on coil and ground... MAY be "ON" or "OFF" with key "ON"... should flash rapidly during cranking, if the module is working, and pulsing the coil as it's time for each cylinder to fire.

Bob, that's the way I have it connected and wired. I did check the + and - but I did not check it while cranking over to see if the - flickers. I'll check that out. thanks

On my 901 a similar problem ended up being the resistor (near the ignition swith). You might want to check and make sure the old resistor isn't still in the circuit between the ignition switch and the coil and that your coil has the resistor built in.

Disconnect the (small) wire from the coil to the distributor. Using two jumpers with clips on their ends, take a ignition condenser and attach one jumper from its body mounting tab to ground. Take the other jumper and go from the coil empty terminal (from above disconnect) to the lead on the condenser. Pull the spark coil wire out of the distributor, and tape it so it is 1/4" away from the engine block. Turn on the ignition and (holding the body of the condenser)touch the condenser lead to a clean shiny ground. A tiny spark may happen at the point in time when you touch it, but when you pull it away the spark at the coil wire should jump fat and blue to the block. If this works, you have either a bad electronic unit, or it is not wired correctly, or it is for the wrong polarity of battery ground in your unit. Good luck, JimN

Check to make sure the insulator going into the distibutor is good. If it goes bad you will loose spark and its not an easy thing to find if you don't know to look for it

It's always a good plan to get the ignition system working BEFORE swapping in the electronic module.

When you start with a system that's NOT working, and make so many changes, it's anyone guess where to start.

A little more information would be helpful...

(+) or (-) ground?

6 or 12 Volt?

Exact part # of new coil?

Exact part # of electronic ignition?

A defective condensor will cause that problem. Of course, with the electronic unit, there is no condensor, but the new electronic unit may be defective.
