I have a 2005 2500 Quad Cab (not mega cab) 4 x 4 with an 8' box , 5.7L Hemi and 5 speed auto. I love everything about the truck but the fuel mileage. I haul a four horse gooseneck trailer and it works excellent. I get around 14mpg. If I drive hard at all that # will drop drastically. Great truck. Paul

My brother has an 06 2500 4-door (not mega-cab) with the Cummins and 6-speed. He loves it, Dad says it has too much power! I personally wouldn't buy anything but a Cummins if I was in the market for a truck - but trucks are for pulling in my world, if I want something to use as a car, I'll drive my Honda!

I've also heard that the Hemi is a pretty thirsty gasser, reports of 14 to 15 mpg max - as a comparison, my Dad's 05 F150 5.4 will knock down 18 mpg at 65 mph...

The six speeds do well. Automatics do well since Chrysler put some steroids to the weak sister overdrive unit. Haven't seen much of the new Hemi yet, but have heard that they're a mite thirsty.

Most people I know that work them hard ONLY buy the manual. I worked around a lot of contractors a few years ago and a lot of the ones with the auto. had problems. Don't know if improvements have been made or not. If I were buying I would only get the 6-speed if I were to get a Dodge.

Major improvements have been made to all Dodge transmissions, not just the auto's. The auto behind the 5.7 hemi is the 5-45rfe, and it is an awesome transmission that is extremely durable. You used to be able to get the 5-speed manual behind the Hemi but they have since changed over to the new MercedeesBenz G56 6-speed manual transmission in either the hemi or the Cummins. The 48re is the automatic behind the Cummins and it has been out for about 4 1/2 model years, and has also been extremely durable. We have not had to take one out of a truck yet. We have a new 6-speed auto that is coming out around the first of the year for the diesel that is going to be awesome as well. Comparing any transmissions that Dodge uses today to anything they built 5-10 years ago is not apple's to apple's, they are all totally different, and much more durable. I am a Dodge and Chevrolet dealer by the way, if you wonder how I base my opinions.
