Get to pull the engine...

On my 89 F-350 (460). I have been putting off a rebuild for a while, but it just plain gave up on me the other day. Any ideas on where to lift from on the back side of this old girl. I see the lift ring on the front, but where should I attach at the rear? Thanks.

I know that view pretty well. I have an 88 F-350 4x4 with the 460 in it. I am going to have to do the same job very soon. I have been putting it off too. Mine had meticulous care all its life but for some reason when it hit about 100,000 miles it really started to use oil. It went from using none to using a lot. I think it has broken rings in it. The lift point for the rear is usually a heavy steel bracket like your front one that is bolted to where the exhaust manifolds bolt on. Unfortunately your manifold bolts will probably break off in the head if you try to take them off. I acutally have a engine pulling chain that has flat ends of steel on the ends that I bolt into an accessory hole in the back of the head. They usually have an assortment of 7/16 holes drilled into the backside of each head. That is your best place. Mine earned its keep this week pulling 10,000 pound gravity wagons through the mud harvesting soybeans. I plan on keeping it around a long time. I like the simple interior. Everything works, non power windows or locks, single blinker stalk, dimmer switch on the floor, five speed, Its stripped of options and I love it. You couldn't give me a new vehicle right now if I won it on the price is right. I have had a lot of expensive problems with new vehicles and I am fed up with the cheap electronics and crap they are putting on them. I have literally reached an impass on new vehicles and do not even know what I would even buy anymore. If you get one you need to plan on trading it in every 2 years or you are going to start having problems. Good luck with the project. It is going to be a chore!

Oh my word!, do you think you need a few more hoses and wires in there, i cant see the color of the motor. Looks like R2D2 threw up under the hood! Good luck with that!

Don't you just love the late 80's vacum/emissions engines. R2D2..pretty good, I just thought it looked like spaghetti.

My son and Iremoved a smaller engine a couple weeks ago and we only found one lift ring. We put a jack under the back side of the engine and lifted it there until it got free of the car. Don't know if it will help on your engine though.

Man I wish I had your money. I have yet to spend more on repairs in a month than a new truck payment, for something big save up and keep 2-3 payments worth and you can get either a motor or tranny for a truck that will do about the same thing as a new one.

As for $$$ ? It's how wisely you spend & save what you have. Making $$$, you can work hard searching through straw stacks all day, you still won’t find any gold. I recall as a teenager seeing a poster of a fair haired women holding a glass of champagne, wearing lots of jewelry, wearing a fancy black dress and leaning on a Rolls Royce. The caption below the photo said "Poverty S*cks"………….hmmmmm mmmm. I studied harder at school after that. I didn't complain about being a poor student while my buddies had jobs and cars in their teens and early 20's. I’m doing ok now.

Can't afford to replace, even more $$$ to repair. You can pour all the money you want into an old vehicle and it's still just an old vehicle. I kept a 95 Jimmy around for three extra years until 2004. The repairs cost more than double what the thing was worth. It would have been far cheaper to have dealt it and bought new with that money. I would have had a 2004 Sierra 4x4 within five grand of being paid for, two years ago.

It is going to take alot of parts and work to get up to the 35-40k it would take to buy a new F-350 to replace it. Whether you blow your money on a new truck or a old truck it all comes out the same in the end, you getting a old truck one way or another.

Right on Ranger! I drive an 88 F150, and so far it's been pretty cheap. I got it from my dad, who bought a used 2001 Tacoma that wasn't a year old yet. He just got it paid off about 2 months ago ($13,000) and he hates that thing. Me, I've replaced both gas tanks, 2 sets of tires, a new oil pan, radiator, battery, alternator, starter, washer fluid pump, water pump, wiper motor, 2 mufflers and tail pipes, umpteen oil changes, and I've yet to stick 13,000 in it.

It runs like a top, and it's got almost 200,000 mils on it and doesn't burn a drop. It used to leak oil(1 qt/wk), but then I replaced the pan and it's been great the last 4 years. I do need something bigger to pull a gooseneck with, but this thing has given me 6 years of great service for the little bit of repairs I put into it. It's ALMOST always cheaper to repair than buy new, but sometimes you do just have to bite the bullet and buy a new(er) one.

I love my truck. 6 cyl, 5 spd mazda trans, 2 wd custom edition (plain jane)

I had the local Napa chain engine rebuild shop do a complete rebuild of the 4.3L. Over size pistons, new cam, lifters, new valves, new valve springs, new everything. Do the job right. 1st engine, siezed. They used to long a bolt in the oil pump and pushed the main bearing into the crank. 2nd engine.Noisy and full of filings. They used the ne wstyle cam bearing in the old style block = no lubrication for the balancer shaft. 3rd engine. They missed installing the bushing in the cam timing gear. Turns out the cam was at least 15 degrees adavnced.Spent a lot of time looking for that phantom. Transmission needed a rebuild as it was loosing oil at the torque seal anyways. Plus all the normal stuff like batterys, rad, starter,alternator, brakes everything, exhaust system. My full optioned 2003 Sierra 4x4 has cost 2/3 of the repair money put into last 30,000 miles of that Jimmy. I did a pile of the work myself so shop labour bills are not a majority of the bills.

Well, I guess if you keep putting crap motors in a truck it could get pricey. Most people tear down longblocks and check everything because once in awhile stuff slips thru. I am not saying everything should be fixed, but just a wore out engine is nothing to be afraid of.

There should be a lifting point somewhere on the back of the engine on the right hand side looking at it. (drivers side) I cant remember exactly where off hand, but there should be one there. It may be down near the firewall under some wires or hoses. Make sure you have all lines disconnected before you try to take the motor out. The fuel lines are a pain to get off when the engine is half out and stuck there. 8)

That other lift point should be back there somewhere unless someone has removed the darned thing. Don't know if this is it or not.
