OT: Favorite trees?

What are your favorite trees, and why?

I have three favorites:

1. Sycamore. I have so many fond memories of climbing sycamores as a kid. They were very friendly to climbers. But I also love the color and habitat of the sycamore. Around here, they stay near waterways, so they're always cool and inviting in the summer.

2. Beech. I have yet to meet a tree with better looking bark. Plus, you can write messages on them. We have a tree on our property signed "B Rupe 1957".

3. Hedgeapple. Another tree that reminds me of my childhood. We called them "brain trees" because the fruit looked like an alien's brain. Now that I'm grown, I love them for their wood -- excellent for posts, and excellent for a hot fire in the fireplace.

What about you?

I love any chetsnut tree and also American elm. Followed by black walnuts and American Sweetgum. I've got a pretty good sized ironwood down near a spring that runs at the back of our place. Kind of unusual, but I like that one too. I have a few "queen of heaven" trees I'll be getting rid of in the next year or two. Right now, they are providing shade to a japanese walnut I planted from seed a few years ago.

Great topic!?!?! Favorite tree - Magnolia. Around here, those hedgeapple trees are called Bois d'Arc trees and them stinkin' things hurt when you step on one of those thorns.

I like all trees.

But around here on our place,I really enjoy the pin oaks and the blue spruce. I like the wild apple trees too. And in the fall, there's nothing prettier than the poplars when their leaves turn yellow.

We built our house in the middle of a hay field 33 years ago. No trees except in the hedge rows. Sine then, we've planted 62 trees, the last one just planted Monday. It's a hard maple that my mother-in-law started in a pot from a seed five years ago. We've been nurturing it and decided it was ready to plant. She died in 2003 and we feel it was a nice thing to do to honor her memory.

I like just about all trees, even some that one would call weed trees. We have most of the North east hardwoods on our farm. Our 1898 barn timbers were made from timbers cut on our farm. A lot of American Chestnut in it and also one beam is Black Walnut. I like Eastern Hemlock, it is the state tree of PA. White pine and White Fir. A couple of trees I don't have much use for are Devil's Walking Stick, a true weed tree that can take over an area if it gets started and one called Ailanthus, an import from China. Ailanthus is the official tree of W. PA PennDOT I think. It grows along all the road right of ways. It is often mistakingly called Sumac but it isn't in the Sumac family. Common name is Tree of Heaven. Who's heaven I don't know. It grows very fast, takes more heat to burn than it produces, and in 2-3 years will take over a field or pasture. Cut them off in the spring and by fall they are 4' tall and 1-2" in diameter. And did i mention that they stink. Short lived but can become huge 40' high or more and over 15" in diameter. Very weak tree, big ones die and after a year a big wind breaks them off and they're lying in your hay field. Anyone know of a commercial use for these things? Just to be clear I don't like them!!

By far the American chestnut, even though an Asian blight wiped out all mature trees years ago. Reseachers think they will come up with a resistant variety some day.
I have plenty of 3-5 foot live trees sprouting off old stumps on my property. Pretty sad demise if you look at the huge economic impact their nuts & lumber gave us and food source for wildlife.
There's even a cult-like following today. Check out The American Chestnut Foundation site, photos of railcars full of chestnuts, etc.

For shade Soft Maple, to look at in the fall Hard Maple, for corner post Hedge. I don"t burn wood and never have, but from what my Dad had told me Red Oak for heat. My big barn is built out of Sycamore, I am 65 this month and I just can remember it being built when I was about 3 or 4.

I guess I never really thought about my favorite tree, I like a lot of them. Some are really neat because of the shape or size of the individual tree not the species. I'm trying to plant a variety of them as I get time and money, and some are coming up wild. On my land I have the following trees; Sugar maple, black walnut, sycamore, weeping willow, tulip tree, cotton wood, box elder, mulberry, white pine, blue spruce, redbud, dawn redwood, buckeye, black willow, pin oak, elm, sweet gum, hawthorn and cedar. I'm sure I have a few others in the woods that I have'nt noticed. I do however, HATE these trees, box elder, mulberry and hawthorns. The hawthorn's thorns are obvious and the other two look like crap. I also would never have silver maples or cottonwoods near a house or structure, they break too easy.

Most people know mine by the e-mail adress, have always marveled at the splendor of the Ulmus Americana - American Elm, for it's beautiful canopy. Darned Dutch Elm Disease has ruined what is truly a marvelous tree, that was indigenous to this country.

Wild apple trees, my entire hillside is loaded with them, many are good for eating.

Pear Trees - have 2 that produced so many this year I could not possibly eat, give away or store the fruit.

All the indigenous pine variety's.

I am very selective about cutting trees down, sometimes it has to be done, but they just take so long to grow, the hill next to my house was part of a large field, let overgrown for probably 30 years, the cherry trees that have come up are unreal, there is a nice crop of logs here, for future reference, however, if one were to clear the brush, and leave the trees, it will be one beautiful hillside.

Shag Bark Hickory gets my vote too.

I like em all, always been fascinated by trees, have even climbed up 60 feet to make a crows nest deer stand, in an old cherry, like the view from there.

I like Ponderosa pines, because they are about the only tree that survives here in this fairly dry area without being watered. The Ponderosas are very tough and can grow very large in a good location. The price for Ponderosa logs also has been pretty good, though I really don't have much that would be marketable for about 20 more years, depending on how much moisture we get.

I have burned lots of Pine firewood. I wish it split easier and wasn't so messy and gave out more heat when it was burning, but since it is what I have had, I have used it. I found that the wood made from the large branches is pretty easy to deal with.

So I like Ponderosa Pines. I wish there was a market for the "pine straw" that comes off them, like there is in the South, since I have a bunch of it. They are pretty trees that will continue to be there, almost no matter what happens.

There was a short book written - about what a Ponderosa Pine saw happen thoughout its lifetime spanning hundreds of years. It is a beautiful but sad story. It was authored by the sort-of fake Canadian Indian Grey Owl - book titled simply THE TREE. One of my favorites along with his stories of living with beavers - e.g. SAJO AND THE BEAVER PEOPLE, PILGRIMS OF THE NORTH, TALES OF A LONELY CABIN, etc.

The Tree, by Wa-Sha-Quon-asin (Grey Owl). c1937.

Aloha, First choice for me would be a mango tree and the second would be a tangerine tree. I had a small tree house in ours, it also held my swing and gave us a lot of delicious mangoes which we dipped in a mixture of shoyu, salt, pepper and vinegar. Oh, the tangerine was also delicious with salt and pepper.

Well,
I guess my favorite varies somewhat.
I've got several apple trees, a couple of cherrys, some walnuts and a few butternuts too.
All of which are dear to me. But I have one tree - a tall, slender basswood that come Saturday morning will be my favorite tree of all.
I'll be sitting in it in my deer stand.

Shumard Red Oak - Love the big leaves and the red color in the Fall.

Live Oak (Western) - Cause they are evergreen

Water Oak - Just pretty trees, get huge, and I have some big ones in my back yard.

Pin Oak - Love the gracfull look.

Burr Oak - They get big and have big acorns.

Magnolia - Lots to love about this tree, flowers, huge green leaves, and evergreen.

Most interesting tree? Tickle Tounge, cut some bark and put it in your mouth and it makes your tounge go numb. Grows wild here.

Most hated? Hackberry

I like the oaks on my farm as well as the black walnuts each are good for the wildlife. I look for fallen hickory trees to cut up and burn.

However, I gotta tell you folks, I don't see why anybody would have any use for a Hedge apple (Osage) tree. They grow like weeds here, the thorns are terrible for tires, cattle and people. If you try and cut one down, three grow up in its spot. If you have them pushed over with a dozer they are wider laying over than they were standing up, and there doesn't seem to be a single straight trunk or branch on them to use as posts. If anybody is interested in cutting down as many as they want just let me know, I'll set ya loose on my property. I cut one up a while back and left a piece of branch on the ground, about 5 inches in diameter and about3 feet long. Went to pick it up a few weeks later and it had rooted into the dirt. You can't kill them!

MAN! If you was closer! That's about all that is USABLE for a post around here! They bring pretty good cash. A post doesn't have to be straight to be a good post - just strong and long lasting. There is a consignment sale every spring in a small town near here. Last year they had 2000 Hedge posts. There was a guy there from North Platte NE that drove all the way down here JUST to buy the posts. He was one of many. Spray the stump and it will die.
