I did not think about it until I just finished posting a message on the Ford board, but you fellows seem to be well versed on most topics, so I thought what the heck...

I had trouble calving today. One of them I had to call the vet to assist. He had to pull it with a calving jack as it was breach. Now the calf is having a hard time standing. I fed colestrum from a bottle tonight. I have only had one other experience with a calf not standing after being pulled and it ended badly.

I was curious if anyone had any advise or words of wisdom that might help save this calf.

Thanks
Semo

Try hard to get him to suck on the cow if at all possible. Better for both. If you have a live calf and cow after a breech birth you are lucky already. When the cord gets pinched during birth it stimulates the calf to breath which works fine if it's head first. If it's head last they usually suffocate. Good luck. Critters try hard to survive.

I am assuming that he seems weak, and nothing else obviously wrong. Give the little guy some time. He's had a hard arrival in this world. You gave him a good feed of colustrum, which was the best thing you could do. let him digest and rest.

John

Well wen i do it i jist keep milken out the cow and keep the littel feller full- warm and dry and it should work for ya---Now if its 10above and snow like it is out here i would keep covering him with straw---A heat lamp workes good to if you want to burn your barn down. ;o)
