Well my freinds we passed yet another depressing mile stone....end of summer. As like most of you guys i hate this time of year, less work to get done outside. But this evening is the worst, dark at 5:00. I found to be one of the few that made it to church on time this morning, lets just blame it on daylight savings time. But im sure we will all get used to the time and season change as the excitement and duldrums of the holidays approaches. And for us the men who tame the earth with their wild beasts of iron, plan for a new season and get the equipment ready to go, looking at seed and fertilizer catalogs, and dreaming of the long warm days, being slightly sunburt watching the sun go down across the freshly planted feilds at 10:00pm. For me the season starts early, as January approaches, we weather the gray days by, cleaning and organizing the greenhouses, ordering soil and looking forward at another prosperous year. How do most of you guys feel about this time of the year, and what do you do until spring?

it's not A time to play around ALL THE TIME, as we have to prepare for the spring/summer season of next year!! we have to overhaul and maintain our tractors and equipment, split wood, work on our houses to get them winterized and fixed up a little, tend to the animals, plow snow, winterize our vehicles, and a whole lot more stuff.

NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE FOR WINTER...GET THAT WOOD SPLIT AND IN THE DRY...AND GET THE EQUIPMENT READY!

You know, we've been saving all this daylight for years. One would think we could make a withdrawal once in a while. Why are we saving it?
It's just another government boondoggle. I think they stored it all under the polar ice cap and the containers are starting to leak.
Sun shining and eighty degrees today.

Well, actually we just went off daylight savings time and are on regular time now. I kinda wish we could stay on "daylight savings time" year round.

Best way to make the winter go fast is to learn to play in the snow.
Ski, skate, snowmobile, ice fish. I've skiied for decades and when my job requires me to go to Fla. for two weeks in Jan I hate it.

I can see your point, but for me, I look forward to this time of the year. All spring/summer long I'm working 5:00am to 3:00pm six days a week on first job and then go out and work till dark at a second. I have no time to take care of things on the home place and no time to work on restoration of tractors/equipment. By now both jobs have slowed down to managable pace and I can get projects around the house done and finally spend some quality time in the shop. The days may be short and nights cold and long, but I have lights and heat in the shop, so all is good. Hopefully by the time the warming winds of spring approach I will have a tractor or two ready to paint.

I agree. This is the best time for brushing, last mowing, cutting firewood and even discing an unused feed lot. Am getting hunting blinds set (there were three deer in the yard two nights ago that I could have hit with a stick they were so close) and getting tractors put in shop for winter fixes. I too heat my shop and look forward to more quality shop time coming up. I am looking at the snowplow that should get mounted today along with other attention and right behind that are two snowmobiles waiting for me to look at. Let it snow!

I think it can be depressing, one thing that helps with the onslaught of short days, is the hunting season, but after that ends, it's time to fast forward to spring !

Some of us here, try to get the big pond ( 23 acres ) cleared off, prepared, after it freezes, and get some hockey games going on Sat/Sun skiing and other activities close by in Vermont are always fun, but you do have to be creative and stay busy, kind of helps you get by.

I've created some more space here to work in during this time, that has yet to be finished, it sure will be nice to have additional space to work on a few things, when the weather is cold, days short and the snow flies. Somehow we make it to the spring, kind of my favorite time of year, always enjoy it.

If some one didn't get to church on time they should have been an hr. early, did that one my self years ago. So missing chuch should not be an excuse. No No I don't like the changing of time I would like to just leave it on or off. It does not change the woring hrs a bit just the time we do it. Jim

When these days (daylight) get shorter and you drive to and from work in the dark, spend the day in a windowless warehouse and don't see the light of day for 4 or 5 days a week, its no wonder people suffer from seasonal depression, although I always thought that was the time when the ice was too thin to walk on and to hard to put in the boat yet :)

The only thing that always got me through these months was bowling tournaments and leagues. The tournaments (semi-pro)usually lasted all weekend. The competition is fierce and the money not bad and there are many choices every weekend. The problem I have now, though is, I just had a total knee repl. on my slide/plant knee. Even if I bowl again,I won't be competitive. Knee is doing great, but they won't hold up to that kind of abuse. I have decided I will get back into body&paint and maybe do a couple antique tractors for some of the locals. They have been on me to do their tractors for a long time. I'm 56, nice warm shop and little extra money, no deadlines, sounds good to me. Winter should fly by!
