I was told that dexron (although more money) is a better hydraulic fluid to use in cold temps than standard hydro fluids because it doesn"t thicken as much. Does anyone have any experience with this? I"ve been using AW 32 hyd oil, is it comparable to dexron? Thanks.

I think the main difference is in the viscosity. ATF is basically 10W. I have a log splitter that either uses ATF or AW10.

A 32 fluid should work okay for most systems, but it is a little thin for say an old gear pump.
As I understand it the 32 is more for piston and vane type pumping systems.

The dexron is used in Automatic transmissions and the car companies wanted a fluid that will flow at -30F. I have used put dexron (and dexron derivatives) in many hydraulic systems for machines.

My snow plow lift manufacturer recommends dextron for use in my Monarch brand pump - works fine in all conditions where snow plowing is the task of the day.

I have a small Ford tractor and was using a generic teansmission- hydraulic fluid and the hydraulics were jerky and slow so I was told to use the 134 hydraulic fluid so I changed it and added a can of SEA FOAM hydraulic conditioner and now the hydraulacis work fine.I have always had Farmall tractors and I do know for sure that the hydraulics worhed best with HY-TRAN than with the other fluids. When you get something that works good , stick with it.I would drain ,flush and refill with hydraulic fluid and see what happens. If you need to , add a can of SEA FOAM.

I use 32aw In my hoe and H and have had no ill effects in the winter, I use the hoe for cleaning snow so I will let it warm up for 10 15 minutes before using it.

One thing to think about is using different implements on different tractors. The result is fluid from one tractor becomes mixed with fluid of another tractor. I use the generic farm store fluid in everything and don't worry about it.

I have a Massey backhoe attachment that I was going to power with prince pto pump and seperate reservoir so mixing isn't a problem.

My hoe is a International 350. The pump runs off the front part of the crank shaft so it is seperate.
