O.T. computer problem

I was on Yahoo Tuesday evening and haven't been able to get on there since. Every other website I have tried works fine. I have run the virus scan, cleared the history, cache and cookies. I called my ISP (local phone company). The young man I talked to said there is something on my computer that is blocking Yahoo but couldn't help me any further. Does anyone know how I could have inadvertantly blocked just one website and how to undo it? Thank you.

Have you rebooted the computer? A reboot can solve a lot of problems.

Use the nslookup command to see you can resolve the name of the site to an IP.

nslookup yahoo.com

If you can't do an nslookup on the name of the site, then either there's a problem with your ISP's DNS server, or you're typing in the wrong name.

If you can do an nslookup, the next step is to use the traceroute ("tracert" on Windows) to see where your problem is.

tracert yahoo.com

You'll get a bunch of lines with network hops. If there's a firewall issue, you won't make past the first or second hop. Whereever the lines turn to all stars, that's where your problem is. (Unless the last hop is "something-or-other.yahoo.com".

If your ISP is at fault, the tracert report is all the proof you need.

Hi Mark, Can you give me a little more detail on how to do this process? I am not a computer expert by any means. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

I originally tried to send you all the details, but ytmag wouldn't let me post. I guess it was too big.

I saw in your other request that your machine couldn't ping www.yahoo.com. OK, there are basically two things that can cause this problem: Either your PC can't do a DNS lookup to get the right IP address for www.yahoo.com, or else it can't route to the IP once it finds it.

Open up an MS/DOS Window. (Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt). Type in "nslookup www.yahoo.com". The last two lines in the response should look something like this:

Name: www.yahoo.com
Address: 209.191.93.52

If nslookup says it can't find the name, call up your ISP, tell them that you have a "DNS lookup problem". (Use those exact words, so that they transfer you to someone who can actually fix the problem.)

OK, if nslookup gives you a good IP, then the next thing to do is to try to route to the address. I like to use the traceroute command (tracert on Windows). Type this into the command window:

tracert www.yahoo.com

You will slowly get a list of lines with addresses on them. These are the hops that your request is making to get to yahoo. You might see some lines that are just three stars ("* * *"). Those are hops that didn't answer. If you see one or two of these lines it's no big deal. If you get more than 3 or 4 in a row, you might as well stop the program with a "Ctrl-C", because your message isn't going any further.

OK, if the last hop you have (before all stars) ends in "yahoo.com", then you were able to route to yahoo and you should have no problem. However, if the last hop is something else, then you weren't able to route to yahoo. Not only that, you can see what the last hop was that you made, and your ISP should be able to use that information to fix the problem. Call up your ISP and tell them that you have a "routing problem". Again, you need to use those exact words, unless you want to spend the next hour talking to some dolt who can't actually fix your problem.

Good luck.

Hi Mark, I followed your directions and this what I got.
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob>nslookup www.yahoo.com
Server:newport.ntcnet.com
Address:205.232.95.2

DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds.
***Request to newport.ntcnet.com timed out

I have no clue what all of this means. Thank you for your assistance.

Congratulations! You've discovered the source of your problem. Try doing an nslookup on a site that you can reach, such at "www.ytmag.com". You should see that you're getting a good return, something that looks like this:

[mark@leghorn ~]$ nslookup www.ytmag.com
Server: 64.79.64.4
Address: 64.79.64.4#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.ytmag.com canonical name = ytmag.com.
Name: ytmag.com
Address: 64.113.213.241

If you get a bad answer for yahoo, but a good answer for ytmag, then the problem is definitely with your ISP's DNS server. Just tell them "I can do a DNS lookup on any name EXCEPT yahoo.com." If they don't know what that is, or they don't know how to fix it, then they should not be in the ISP business.

Bob,
Go to tools/internet options/ click on the content tab and look if Yahoo is on the blocked list. If it is it could get there by some one in household playing joke, some one out of house hold playing joke if you have XP, or spyware you have on your computer.
Good Luck,
Jim

Hi Jim, I clicked on "tools" and then "options". I don't see anything that says "content tab". What now? Thanks.

There should be a line of icons across the top General, Privacy, Content, etc.

One other thing to try. Open a Command window (from Start, pick Run, then enter the word "cmd" without the quotes in the input box labeled "Open:" and hit OK). When the command window opens type the following and press the Enter key:

ping www.yahoo.com

You should get a few replies. If that works there's something blocking it in your browser; if it doesn't work it's your firewall or hosts file.

Hi Tom, I tried your suggestion. It said "Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check name and try again. Where do I go from here?

Aloha, What happens when you type www.Yahoo.com? Do you have a firewall, antivirus software? Sometimes you may have disabled that particular site so I would look into your protection software. Oh, also some sites want you to accept cookies. Hope this helps. TIA

When I type in www.yahoo.com I get an error message that says the address cannot be found. I have tried checking the security settings the best I know how. Nothing has helped. Thanks.
